Sherwood - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the chance to interview Sherwood. We talked about their comeback and their new album Some Things Never Leave You. They were kind enough to describe how the album was more like a redirection of their efforts back to Sherwood, how they knew they needed to get loud sometimes, and the process behind "Bottle It Up". Check out the full interview after the jump!

Some Things Never Leave You is your first album back after the hiatus. What was the writing process like for the band for this album and what was the experience like coming back to this band and working on the album?

I think we came to this album with a lot more different skills under our belts than we had on previous records.  We haven't stopped working on music at all, so it wasn't like dusting off the old skills or anything; it was more just redirecting our efforts back to Sherwood for a time. That was a ton of fun.

The album sounds fresh and the next step in your band, but also has that familiar Sherwood sound. When you worked on this new album what were some of the most important things you wanted to bring to these songs and how did you hope your longtime fans would respond?

We wanted to make sure that it still sounded like our band, within some reasonable expectation of what our fans might be looking forward to. So, it needed to get loud sometimes, needed to be emotionally impactful, needed to feel nostalgic in a similar way as much of our old songs did. Other than that, we felt pretty free to experiment with whatever sounded good to us.

"Bottle It Up" is one of my favorite songs on the new album. Can you tell me a little about the writing process of the song both lyrically and musically?

It started out as a kind of obscure line, "I won't bottle it up for you," and Nate and I could not agree on what that meant, ha! So we talked it out lyrically, and he thought it should be about an inability to hold stuff back when you are with someone you love. Eventually that led to the idea that it's basically two siblings talking about the house and neighborhood they grew up in. Musically, it was mostly just me and my guitar working it out; nothing too interesting there!

I can remember ordering your EP off Smartpunk years ago when you were first getting some buzz. Since that time to now what have been some of the biggest changes in not only how you run the band but your lives?

Well we all moved to different states and got married. We grew up a lot, matured. We know better what is important to us and what isn't. Of course, that is always an ongoing process. But we basically grew up into proper adults since those days.

You released the new album on vinyl and some of your back catalog has also been repressed. How important is it for you guys to release your work on vinyl and are there any chances we'll see more from the band being pressed?

It's just so fun to see vinyl copies of our albums! I buy vinyl myself, so it's especially enjoyable for me. Yeah, I think you can expect ADL and QU in not too long...

Now that the album is out what are some of your other plans for the remainder of 2016?

We have some West Coast shows next month, and if those go well, we might do more.

I guess that about wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else you would like to add?

Nope, thanks!
