Its Always You - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Eddie of Its Always You. We discussed what inspired a love of music, writing and recording their EP, favorite lyrics, releasing a cassette with Stay Tough Records, their new split with Stalemate, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Hello, thank you for the interview.

Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you become interested in music?

Myself (Eddie) and my guitarist (Matt) were in another band that was more Emo music before Its Always You, but me and him were the only ones really taking it serious and putting the time in so we decided to branch off and start the band Its Always You and we both shared a love for Pop Punk music so that's the direction we went in. At first it was really hard to get things going cause a lot of  the early members just wanted to do the band temporarily as they had other commitments so we had a lot of members come and go but now I’m confident in saying that the members we have now are a really solid bunch of guys and are putting the same efforts in that me and Matt have been putting.

My (Eddie) love for music started back when I was a kid. My favorite artist growing up was Akon and I remember I would try to sing like him, but my early youth was listening to whatever was on the radio as we never had internet in our household. It wasn't until my senior year of high school I finally got on the internet and went searching on youtube for new music. One day I came across a song called Your Graduation by Modern Baseball and it blew me away and I remember thinking to myself "I wish I could make a song like this" and from there I went on and found a bunch of bands I listen to this day and many different genres and that's when I truly fell in love with music.

Your EP ‘I’m Falling Apart Too’ came out earlier this year. Can you tell me about writing and recording it?

The recording process for our EP was very interesting, We've recorded our singles before the EP with a friend called Billy Sweets who had a recording studio in Anaheim, but he ended up going to college in Arizona so when it came to recording the EP we did it all at our houses and sent the Stems to him where he would mix and master them. Matt came up with the guitar and bass parts and our drummer Kurtis would record his drum parts and then I would write the lyrics down and record them and for the features as well they did it at their own places and then it would all be sent to Billy.

I think we're really lucky that we have the ability to all come up with our parts separately without all jamming together and still be able to come up with some amazing and beautiful songs in my opinion. Many of the lyrics of the song touch up on addiction and suicide and are about a loved one I had that was an addict and sadly took their life. I'm not sure if it makes sense, but me writing about these things was kind of a way to try and understand why they did what they did.

Do you have a favorite lyrical or musical moment from the EP? Why?

I honestly have a lot of favorites. Like in the first song Deep In My Skin in the chorus "Don't make the same mistakes I know that you'll find your way" or for the song "I Swear" the last verse is my most honest and emotional lyrics I've made. "I can't believe I use to wish you were dead cause now that you're gone I’d give anything to see you on your bed, wassup son, and feel your kiss on my head". Dealing with someone who’s addicted to drugs is not easy so I grew a lot of resentment towards them cause I was young and I didn't understand what addiction was or why they kept choosing that life over me so some days it felt like it was easier if they just left than to deal with them. It's something that brings me a lot of regret these days.

The chorus for Burn Through "I know you're trying not to fall apart but every new night you got another scar and I’m trying to be strong for you but I’m falling apart too" was the first time I ever got emotional writing lyrics down and was very proud I came up with it and knew that the song was gonna be special.

For the last song, Cailee Spaeny the song is sad but hopeful as the chorus goes "Someday I won't be lonely I'll show you I can be somebody". It’s very simple but because Matt and Kurtis did an amazing job on the chorus it comes out very beautiful and triumphant and honestly is probably my favorite lyrics on the EP. It brings it all together and that song live sounds very beautiful as well. Our other guitarist Carlos does an amazing job playing the lead and our bassist David does a good job as well. I'm a big chorus person.

You worked with Stay Tough Records for a cassette of the EP. How did you end up working with them? Is it important to your band to have a physical release?

We played a couple shows at The Programme and Stay Tough told us that if we ever released something he would do cassettes for us and when we finally released the EP we got in contact with him and he made the process easy and now we finally got some cassettes. It is very important, I'm a big physical media person so I think it's cool you can actually own your own copy of the EP and it's yours to keep.

You have a split coming up with Stalemate. What can you tell me about that so far?

Stalemate is a very cool band and the members themselves are a solid bunch of guys. We met them playing shows and just sending Dms back and forth and they asked us if we were down to do a split with them and we were very down and I'm excited for people to listen to it and hopefully enjoy it. I think it's funny cause their song titles are pretty serious and our’s are more of a joke but the songs themselves are really good and stay true to Pop Punk and the EP cover is a nod to another Pop Punk album that is a classic. The lyrics this time are different; it's more about breakups and heartbreaks with very Pop Punk melodies. The split is out May 16th!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

I'm not sure if I was supposed to type this much and I'm sorry for the typos if there are any, but thank you for the questions and the interview.
