Jesse Smith & The Holy Ghost - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the chance to interview Jesse Smith & The Holy Ghost. We talked about the band's new album, video, and briefly about ZAO. Check out the full interview after the jump! Want a flashback to August 2012? Check out our interview with Jesse Smith & The Holy Ghost.

First off, thanks for the interview.

Jesse: Thanks for reaching out.

Your new album came out not too long ago. Can you tell me a little about the writing process? How long did you work on the album and what was your studio experience?

Yeah it came out July 8th. This record was interesting because it was made over the last couple few years. When I started writing it was just myself. Then I started working with some producer friends. On the record I played the majority of the instruments but would bring in friends on certain songs. I had several different release options fall thru and I came to a place where I just wanted to get some music out there. So the record is a collection of various songs from those sessions. We tracked in Cleveland in 2013 & 2014. Most of the record was cut at Michael Seifert’s old studio ante up audio. The rest was in homes and practice spots. Now that we are a full on band we are really excited for record #2. Lots of new music. Good vibes.

You just released the video for "Killing Me Someone". Why did you pick that song as the first single and what about that song is really special to you?

My buddy Rob Montague of Late Morning Films shot it. I met him while working on Brandon Zano’s video for “You’ll never be with anyone else”. He’s a great guy, a great talent and we’ve become good friends. He shot a documentary called “Long way to the top” that I loved and we started talking about doing something together. I sent him some songs and he really dug that one so I let him do his thing. We shot it last summer at Suma in Cleveland. It’s been in some International film fests and people have seemed to enjoy it. Had a blast making it. When we shot the video I hadn’t found a home for the release. It was the song he wanted to do so we did it. It wasn’t a single per say.

The artwork is really interesting and eye catching. Who came up with the concept and why did you decide on it for the artwork?

My gal pal Faith Peck painted it for us. I’m a big fan of her work so I asked her if she would want to work together. I had come up with the logo when the band came together and I knew I wanted it in the artwork some way or another. We got together a few times to brainstorm and she killed it.

You are heading out on tour with Islander (a band I really like!). How did that opportunity come about and what can fans expect from these shows?

We are really stoked to go out with the Islander guys! I became friends with Mikey a while back and we talked about going out last year but it didn’t work out. I was so pumped when he hit me up about this run. It worked out nicely. They are positive dudes and they rip so it should rule. You can expect us to go full throttle and give smiles after. We are excited to get back out. The tour we just did with He Is Legend was great. Made a lot of new friends and people seemed to connect with the music. We are grateful to be able to go out and play.

I know you used to be in ZAO and I don't want to ask too many ZAO questions, but I saw that ZAO posted about your album, and also heard some rumors around that there was some possibilities of some ZAO shows with you returning. Is there any validity in that and would it ever be something that you would be interested in?

Those dudes are my bros. Why would I go back out with ZAO when they already have a drummer that rules? Jeff is the man. Scott and I have talked about the two of us doing some shows together. I’m excited for them to get this new record out! I’ve heard some tracks and its nasty.

I guess that wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else you would like to add?

I appreciate you taking the time. Thank you.
