Meanings - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the chance to interview Meanings. Check out the full interview below.

First off, thanks for the interview.
Thank YOU for reaching out!

Will you tell me a little about how you got into music and started Meanings for anyone who isn't familiar with your band?
Well both Sean and I have played in previous touring bands around our area. Both much heavier backgrounds regarding our previous projects, although our roots lie in the Pop Punk genre for sure. We felt we needed an outlet for something more melodic, and straight to the point. Meanings ended up becoming our Pop Punk vessel.

You released your new EP 'Everything's Fine'. How long did you work on the EP and what was the recording process like?
It’s funny, we actually recorded that EP back in 2017 with Adam Cichocki at Timber Studios, and we sat on releasing it for a while. The lyrics all pretty much touch on the subject of a lost love as I had personally just gone through my first serious break up. After bringing these songs to life, I went into kind of a dark place still sad about my 6 year relationship coming to an unexpected end. I wasn’t sure if I ever wanted to release the EP. I put off naming the songs/EP for so long. Eventually I decided it was time for me to get my ass out of this depression and move forward with things including releasing the EP. Around that same time we were approached by Penultimate Records and everything just felt right.

You released a music video for the title track and I thought it turned out really cool. Who came up with the idea for the video and what was the video shoot like?
The video for Everything’s Fine was a lot of fun to make. It was pretty much our director, Ro, who came up with the idea for the video! I truly feel it accurately represented the lyrical and melodic aspects of the song so we were really stoked on the outcome!

"Foxcatcher" is probably my favorite song on the EP. What was the writing process like for that song? Lyrically where did you find inspiration for it?
Foxcatcher is a song about hopelessly searching for ways to save a relationship that’s destined for failure. It’s kind of a personal note to myself, but I also wanted it to be relatable to anyone who has gone through a similar experience.

You released the EP on Penultimate Records. They have a really strong roster of bands right now. What made you decide to go with them?
Penultimate Records have been fantastic to work with and when we were first in contact with them, it just felt right. Jamie is a fantastic guy who cares so much about the artists he works with and it’s a really apparent aspect of his personality that you notice very quickly.

What all do you have coming up this year? Will you be touring or releasing any more new music?
We have a western U.S run coming up in March that we are really excited about! Got some other tours in the works for spring/summer, as well as heading back into the studio in June to track our first LP which we are aiming to release early fall.

I guess that wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else you would like to add?
Thanks a bunch for the questions! Looking forward to whenever this gets posted.
