Dazey Doom - Sound In The Signals Interview

📸 @xnjstraightedgex

I recently had the opportunity to interview Dazey Doom. We discussed what led her to create music, new song “Grind Your Teeth”, her upcoming EP, the importance of physical media, live shows, and more. Check it out below.

Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you become interested in music?

I have always loved music and knew that singing was my passion. I knew I wanted to brand myself as a sort of character rather than a band after years of failed teenage bands lol. I had the concept for years before anything came to fruition, so it’s been a very long time coming. I’d been going to local shows since I was a teenager and the way a room full of people could be emotionally vulnerable and express themselves surrounded by other like minded peers was something that I knew would be important to me for the rest of my life. I think contributing to the culture and being a part of the music world is the most imperative thing I can do with my time and talent.

You released your new song today. Can you tell us more about writing and recording it?

Yes, I’m so excited about the new song!! It’s called Grind Your Teeth and I wrote it with the incredibly talented Austin Coupe in just a day when I went on a trip to LA. He really is so talented and saw the exact vision I had for the song. I really loved his original work with his first band Adaliah, so I thought it was really cool to be able to collab with him! The single is definitely the stand out song compared to the rest of the EP, so I think it’s going to leave the rest of the songs as a nice surprise. Grind Your Teeth is a really cool new direction for me and I could not be happier with how it turned out.

You also have a new EP coming out this summer. How has your music progressed from the first EP to this new EP?

As much as I love my first EP, I think my new music has much more of the sound I originally wanted to have. More challenging vocal runs, more mosh parts, more sing along parts, and more energy in general. I think these songs will be really fun to play live, but also really fun to sing along to with your windows down driving down the highway. I think there’s a lot more post hardcore/early 2000s New Jersey emo and pop punk influence on this EP. I think of bands like Bayside, Man Overboard, and Senses Fail with this new stuff. However, I think the single is more Flyleaf/Avril Lavigne and early 2000s pop rock inspired.

Ephyra released the ‘Comfort In Chaos’ on CD. Will you be working with them for this new EP?

I had always really wanted to release through Ephyra because I love their approach on new music in a world where a lot of of music industry labels don’t represent what I believe music should be. Ephyra focuses on investing in real diy artists who contribute to their local spaces and create genuine live music experiences. I’d been approached by other labels that seemed way too focused on social media numbers and tiktoks than actually creating meaningful art and I knew Ephyra would push me in the right direction. I’m very excited to have them releasing my new music as well as the re-release of my first EP.

How did you end up working with Ephyra? Do you like having physical media for your music?

Ephyra is my boyfriend’s label haha, but I’d liked what he was doing long before him and I were together so it just feels like everything fell into place the right way. I love the CDs!! Physical media is so so so important to preserve in this digital age and it’s something I’ll always have with all of my releases.

Is there any chance that we’ll see your music on other physical formats like cassettes or vinyl?

I did cassettes through Sands of Time Recordings for my first EP and I would love to eventually have vinyl in the future. I think cassettes and CDs are my favorite just because you can sell them for pretty low cost, so everyone can enjoy them. Vinyl is super cool, but because it’s gotta be sold at a higher price point, it’s just not as accessible to everyone who might want it.

I know you have plans to tour this fall. Do you know where you’d like to go or who you’d like to play some shows with at this point?

I am really hoping to do a little run down the east coast to south Florida and back. There are so many incredible scenes you can hit in North Carolina, DC, Richmond, and Broward County. I’ve really enjoyed playing shows with Capillary from NJ and Pucker Up! from Scranton. They’ve definitely been my buddy bands in the past year playing shows. I like mixed bills because as someone coming out of the hardcore scene who doesn’t make hardcore music, I wanna play the type of shows in the community I care about, regardless of my sound. In the future I’d love to play with other Ephyra bands like Rosasharin and In2Again, but my main goal is to just play with cool people who make good music and have fun shows. That’s really what it’s all about to me.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?
