Towers - Sound In The Signals Interview

South Coast alt-rockers Towers recently released their new video for "Could Have" and offered a behind-the-scenes perspective for it after releasing a video for "Titan" featuring Ellie Price of Signals. Both songs are from their debut self-titled EP, which will be released on Friday, September 30th. They also recently shared a track by track for the upcoming EP. They were kind enough to tell us why they love writing and playing music, what the recording process was like for the EP, and they teased what's next for the band.

The band has said that "we do it for the love for music, we love playing music, writing music, and we are all best friends". Tell us more about your music and background for those who may not be familiar.

Well all of us have been playing in bands since we were probably 16 years old. Punk, Ska, Hardcore, you name it. ¾ of us were part of a Post Hardcore group called Death Of An Artist for about 5 years before Towers. So we have already been used to each other musically as well as friends. As for our music now, it’s from all of us having a mutual love for rock music. Simple, catchy and fun music that brings a positive message.

You're set to debut your self-titled EP on September 30th. It was recorded with Jonny Renshaw at Bandit Studios. You've said it was the most relaxing recording process. Tell us more about what made it so relaxing and the vision that you all shared during the process.

Well we had 2 days to record each song. We tracked all the drums in the first day and a half and basically just bounced between guitars, bass, vocals and extra bits to songs throughout that time. People may think that’s a messy way of doing it. But we have been in studios before that require all guitars to be done in one clump and so on, and that can get quite exhausting. We got everything done in 5 days. And Spent that last just listening back and making notes, adding some different elements to the songs to make it better. Jonny was so professional and he knew exactly what we were trying to do as a band. It’s really important to work with a producer that shares the same enthusiasm to your music. It makes the whole process run smoother and quicker in the long run.

Your vocalist Mark said your debut single "Titan" "is all about writing again after a year out of being in a band: The feeling you get when it starts to grow into an actual song and my view on what music means to me in general. Finding something that you're passionate about keeps you mentally focused and happy". What is it about music that keeps you focused and happy? How did the feature with Ellie Price come about?

For all of us music has been in our lives since we were kids. We have been writing and playing music for over a decade now. We always felt music was a way to express yourself and your feelings, good or bad. Having some purpose in life is always important. And personally for us, writing music and being in a band is our purpose. It’s a very special and personal journey for all of us.

Your second single "Could Have" was the first song you wrote and it sort of stems from thinking about the opportunities that you have been given and what your life could have been if you went down a different path. It encouraged you to pursue the project and ultimately complete the EP. How did it inspire you? Tell us more about those first writing sessions and why you felt like it clicked.

Ok so this is basically how we started. Death of an artist was winding down and Mark had recently moved to Milton Keynes to be with his girlfriend. In December of 2014 we played our last ever DOAA show. And that was it. When you’re in a band, it takes up a lot of your time, time that Mark and the other guys didn’t know what to do with. So with this new sense of artistic freedom, Mark started writing. Put up all his ideas on his soundcloud and there it sat. Dan did the same, completely separately. About a year later Jamie messaged Mark saying he heard the demo of Could Have and really wanted to be a part of making it into a band. This was pretty much bang on the time Mark was having some problems in his life and put in the motions to move back to Bournemouth and start working on what eventually became Towers. Dan also approached Jamie and Mark with was was Titan, saying he wanted it to become something. Matt was a close from to all the guys and we all basically gravitated to each other during this particular time as friends first, but all of us had very similar ideas and visions of what Towers ended up being. And its exactly what we want it to be. Ellie featured on a Death Of An Artist album as a crowd chant and we always loved her style. All we did was ask and she was more than happy to come and feature on it. And she did an amazing job.

The cover art is of Bournemouth beach. It's a beautiful shot. Why did you decide to use this as the cover art? What's the story behind it?

We wanted something that showed everyone how amazing our hometown could be, the subject matter its very varied on this EP but it all gravitates to seeing the brighter side, and remaining positive. And that shot was such a great shot we couldn’t not use it!

Towers will play a EP launch show at Anvil – Bournemouth on October 14th. What else is coming up for the band as you prepare to release the EP? Do you have any teases for fans who are eagerly awaiting the release?

We are working on the next music video for ‘Otherside’ that will be filmed on Bourenmouth Beach! We are also in talks with playing a few shows in the UK. If not Dec then Jan 17. We also have written our next EP. So its all coming together!

Thanks for the interview. Do you have anything else you would like to add?

Thank you for interviewing us! And supporting such a new band. Its hard these days to get noticed so its great to hear so many positive messages about our music. Remember you can pre order the EP on itunes and when we do play near you, make sure you come along!
