Big Smile - Sound In The Signals Interview

Austin White
I recently had the opportunity to interview Big Smile. We discussed the writing and recording process for new song, “Can’t Even Drown”, favorite moments from the song, the special connection behind the artwork, the energy captured during live shows, the potential for new music, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Absolutely, thank you for your time.

You recently released your new song “Can’t Even Drown”. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for the song?

Can't Even Drown was one of the first songs we wrote with Tommy and Myka in the band so we obviously expected it to sound slightly different than our older stuff. We actually weren't planning on recording as soon as we did but we wanted our new members to be able to represent themselves through our music as well. And we had absolutely no trouble sitting down together and getting something together to take up to Seth at the studio. It's one of my favorite Big Smile songs for sure.

Do you have a favorite lyrical or musical moment from it?

I love the end of the song when it goes to half time, that shit slaps lol. As far as lyrics go, I think the whole chorus has a very Anthemy feel to it, definitely a sing along favorite.

The artwork for the song is really cool. I like the colors and the classic emo/punk feel to it. Where did you get that photo from and why did you feel it fit the song?

So the photo is actually of my cousin’s garage in Illinois. I had my other cousin send me some pictures of the garage/ property and had our media touch em up a bit. We actually have a song recorded about my cousin whose garage is in the photo. He passed away recently and we felt the art went along with that particular song and the whole feel of Can't Even Drown as well.

Can we expect more new music this year? Is there any chance that you’re working on an EP or album?

Absolutely, we have more to come very sooner. Very soon.

You’ve been playing some good shows lately. I saw you opened for Calling All Captains and Chief State. What’s your favorite part about playing live and what can people expect from your live show?

My favorite part of playing live is losing myself for that time we're making Noise up there. I love connecting with the crowd and the energy of a live show is unmatched. Fans can always expect us to be having 100% as much fun as they are having (probably more) and lots of sweat.

Is there any chance that we’ll see any vinyl or cassette releases from the band anytime soon?

Oh man, that would be awesome. I hope we do that at some point.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for having me! I'll just add that you should go stream Can't Even Drown wherever you get your songs from. We appreciate absolutely every single human around us.
