The Second After - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Michael Greason of The Second After. We discussed writing and recording new song, “Changes”, how it’s about “changes in life and the process of accepting its inevitability”, creating the artwork and music video for the song, plans for 2022, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Of course!!

You recently released your new song “Changes”. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for the song?

This one was fun. We had gone up to ABG studios to do a bunch of new songs with Seth Henderson. While we were their recording songs, I mentioned we wanted to collaborate with him on one. We kinda dug through some old demos I had written throughout the past year or so, and Changes was in there! It was only instrumental at the time, and not refined. We kinda rewrote it together and it came out super awesome.

I really like the intro to the song and how it has this heavy moment that moves into a more melodic moment. How did that come about?

We definitely wanted to grab peoples attention right off in this one, and then dial it back into some meaningful lyrics. Often times I’ll just kind of fiddle around and if something is catchy and sticks I just leave it alone haha.

The single artwork is interesting. Where did that photo come from and why did you feel it fit this song?

Our good friend Austin Spruill is our touring photographer. While we are on the road he takes photos nonstop, and we knew he had some magic in this photo. It just has such a vibe to it.

You released a music video for the song as well. What was the video shoot like?

SO MUCH FUN. We did this one with Alex Zarek and Brian Olivo. We had many long talks about ideas for it and what we wanted exactly. The song is about changes in life and the process of accepting its inevitability. We were so stoked that we were able to pull off all the seasonal change effects! It came out magical.

Do you have a favorite moment from the video or a funny story from the shoot?

The “rain” was very cold. Also those bubbles are TOXIC hahaha. One flew in my mouth and down my esophagus during a take, and I literally was outside throwing up for about 10 minutes.

What’s next for the band in terms of new music, tours, etc…?

We have shows and tours lining up. We will be announcing sooner than you think! As for music.. we definitely have some surprises for 2022, we are absolutely thrilled.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

We just want to thank everyone that’s a part of our team, each individual person that believes in us enough to work along side us really means so much. And also a big thank you to our fans that have been following us since the beginning, and sticking through all the twist and turns of the past 4 years. Life has had all kinds of unexpected turns and “changes” (lol), but music is our passion and it’s truly what drives us. It’s so amazing to be able to still do this and share it. ❤
