INDICA - INDICA (Quick Review)

The self-titled Indica release instantly captured my attention when I saw the cover artwork. It's basically an all white background featuring a white skull with golden teeth and the word INDKA in gold. When I hit play I was pleasantly surprised and found myself really enjoying the laid back nature of this project. Indica has an enjoyable singing style, which he uses over mostly smooth beats. The sparse beats have some nice sounds and synthesizers added. It really sounds like a sunshine version of The Weeknd with a slightly more hip hop edge. The ten track project comes off very well and it's very listenable. Indica's woozy vocals strike a similar style to someone like Future or at times Young Thug. A lot of artists are going for that style these days, at times it can become saturated, but what helps Indica is the beat choices on this project as well as being able to do the style really nicely. "Kumbaya" is a big standout. It's a little more upbeat and it peps up the mixtape nicely. I also enjoyed "Valley Girl". It has a nice beat and Indica gives a pretty interesting vocal performance over the song. The vocals blend over the beat and kind of melt into the song in a really interesting way. This is a cool project, it's great for this time of the year, and it's worth checking out!
