I Have No Mouth - Sound In The Signals Interview

📸 Cam Parnoff

I recently had the opportunity to interview I Have No Mouth. We discussed how they started the band, when to expect new music, their live show, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

You're welcome!

Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you become interested in music?

I think we've all been interested in music from a young age, ranging in different genres from funk and classical to metal and even ambient music. We all met at Hampshire College, and our vocalist Jay and guitarist Levi bonded over their love for screamo/hardcore music. Once we started to take the project seriously, we put fliers all over campus and auditioned our bass player Brie, and our drummer Ben.

You label yourselves as a screamo band. What about the genre appeals to you the most? Who are some of your favorite screamo bands?

I think we were a little too happy to be a hardcore band. Screamo is fun and has a large array of influences we can pull from. The alternative music scene in Western Mass is very influential and up-and-coming, and we really wanted to be a part of that. Some bands we bonded over were Orchid (obviously, shoutout Hampshire College), I Hate Sex, Catalyst, and Alexisonfire... we don't care if Alexisonfire is "screamo-adjacent", we like to have fun. Yay!

You’re a relatively new band and you haven’t released a lot of music so far. When can people expect to hear an official release? Do you have any plans for an EP or album yet?

Keep an eye out for an EP this spring ;).

I was watching some of your live shows and fans seem to be into the shows and music. What’s your favorite part about playing live?

It's the most fun you can have while keeping your clothes on! In all seriousness, it's amazing to see the audience connect with the songs we made. We feel like we are part of something bigger, the community here is the most important aspect. Shoutout to the Western Mass homies. WMHC413!

What’s your favorite song to play live? Why?

Jay: Driven by Greed, I can get the most emotional performance out of that one.

Brie: Control, it's rhythmically really fun and it has a freakin' bangin' bass solo.

Levi: Bunny, because I wrote it about someone special teehee.

Ben: Control, because I am playing notes of sixteenth ghost note triplets.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for these questions! Stream "Mental Grime" by Skud.
