The Losing Score - Sound In The Signals Interview

Sarah Maiden

I recently had the opportunity to interview The Losing Score. We discussed how they signed with Counter Intuitive Records, their favorite bands from the label, details about their upcoming album, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thank you for wanting to chat with us!!

You recently announced that you signed with Counter Intuitive Records. How did it work out for you to sign with them?

We've all been big fans of the label ever since we first discovered bands such as Prince Daddy & The Hyena and Mom Jeans back in college, so it became a bit of a dream label to hopefully sign to one day. Once our debut album was done, I sent Jake the album and he was pretty quick to scoop us up. We're excited to work together! Some big shoes to fill but we're in good company.

You shared a video announcing the signing, which I thought was a neat way to make the announcement. Who came up with the idea for it? What have you thought of the response from signing so far?

Our brand has always had a bit of comedy attached to it, even if we're the only ones who find ourselves funny. We wanted to start as we mean to go on, so announcing it with a stupid skit like that only felt right. I came up with the initial Spider-Man parody idea, but the final product was a mix of all our terrible senses of humour, as always. I didn't anticipate wearing a Spider-Man costume until Cal suggested it last minute. And yes, we already had one on hand!

What has the experience been like on the label so far?

We only made things official a couple of months ago, so most of our time with Counter Intuitive so far has been us trying to keep our mouths shut. But Jake and the team are super friendly and seem very keen to make the most of the album release. Shout out to Dexter who is on our side of the giant ocean between us as the CI Recs headquarters!

Who are some of your favorite artists or what are some of your favorite albums that have been released by the label?

As previously mentioned, CI alumni Prince Daddy & The Hyena are one of our favourite bands. We also used to try our best to cover Mom Jeans' Death Cup and Danger Can't when we were first jamming as a band. There's too many to list! Nervous Dater are sick, I'm gonna really miss Retirement Party, and we're very excited to be label mates with Origami Angel too! They helped me through a lot of the pandemic. CI are also affiliated with some of the coolest bands like Macseal and Born Without Bones. Just so much great music!

It was also announced that you’ll be releasing an album this summer. What can you tell me about it so far?

The album is our best thing to date, for sure. We recorded it with Sam Bloor who produced our 2020 single 'Eat Floor, High Fibre' and he's done a really cool job of bringing the songs to life. Writing a full album is daunting but as self critical as I usually am, we're all very proud of it and can't wait for you to hear it. Can't say too much more yet!

Is there a particular song that you’re most excited for people to hear? Why?

We're very excited for the first single to drop. It's one of the most fun songs we've written! There's also a song that we had to drop from our last EP, Closed For Season, that sounds so much better now so we're glad we held onto it instead. Usually bands put their best feet forward for the singles, but choosing singles will be difficult for sure. But without giving away any names, I think track 5 might be my favourite thing I've written so far.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you!! Honestly, we just wanna say thank you so much to everyone for all the love. We didn't expect so many people to care about the announcement, but people came out in the hundreds and it was very overwhelming (in a good way). We just wanna say we can't wait to show you what we've been working on and get back out there playing gigs again!
