Further North - Sound In The Signals Interview

Faith Alesia
I recently had the opportunity to interview Further North. We discussed their upcoming performance at the So What?! Music Fest, writing and recording new song, “Wishing Well”, collaborating with Nick Thompson from Hit The Lights, how the song encourages listeners to step out of their comfort zone, filming the video in an arcade, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thanks for taking the time to chat with us!

You’ve recently announced that you’ll be performing at the So What?! Music Fest. What are you most looking forward to about it?

It’s such a cool opportunity to not only play with some of our favorite bands, but also to be playing in our backyard. I grew up about 2 miles from the stadium we'll be playing in. So, to be able to play with our hometown crowd is exciting.

You recently released new song, “Wishing Well”. Can you tell us more about writing and recording the song?

We felt like the world needed some positive encouragement with everything going on (covid, wars, political turmoil, etc), so we focused on a positive message: even though life can be chaotic and confusing, that doesn't mean it’s bad. Make the best out of it, and find joy in the leaps of faith.

It features Nick Thompson from Hit The Lights. What do you think Nick brought to the song?

We've always been big HTL fans, so just having his voice on the song is rad! But, he changed up the melody (in a great way) and brings a poppier dynamic than what we originally had. He definitely changed the song for the better.

You said the song is about “diving headfirst into life without a parachute”. Tell us more about this and what you hope fans take away from the song.

I think people have so much anxiety, fear, and confusion that they are too concerned to take real chances in life. So, it’s kind of an encouragement to step out of your comfort zone, step out in faith, not really knowing what is coming next. And, while you're stepping out, you'll find others along the way, so you're not doing life alone.

You also released a video for the song. What was the video shoot like and do you have a favorite memory from filming it?

Keeping in the same theme of the song, we wanted to share what it’s like to be around Further North. So, our friend’s Alex Zarek and Brian Olivo, who filmed it, just followed us around, playing in an arcade. We really aim to bring that fun, joyful levity to life.

I don’t think I have a favorite memory, but the whole experience was just so wholesome and fun. Just hanging out with my best dudes.

What else is coming up for the band in 2022?

So What!? is next for us.  We're really pushing that and it’s going to be a blast. We'll have some new songs and music videos as well over the next few months. And, we're working on even newer songs as well.  We hope to get on the road later this year and support those new releases.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Is there anything else that you’d like to add?

Thanks for talking with us, and as always, feel free to reach out to us. We're always available to chat if anyone needs someone to talk to.
