In The Mourning - Sound In The Signals Interview

Kelly Mason

I recently had the opportunity to interview In The Mourning. We discussed early interest in music, the importance of physical forms of music, creating a deluxe version of “At What Cost”, paying homage to Avril Lavigne in the music video for the song, the possibility of new music, and more. Check it out below.

Can you tell me how you got together and formed the band for those who may be unfamiliar? How did you initially become interested in music?

I work in production, so I am constantly collaborating and working with many kinds of artists and creatives. I met my producers, Hansel Romero and Velvet Year, through other projects and music communities and it was truly the perfect collaboration for the sound I love and wanted to achieve for In the Mourning! I was connected to Jesse William Farmer, our live drummer, through a music video casting call I was producing for another artist right before the pandemic hit.

I have always been surrounded by music! My first time entering a formal music environment was in 4th grade when I started playing clarinet, tenor saxophone and percussion in band (yes, I am a full on band geek and I would never trade that experience for anything!).

You recently released a deluxe version of ‘At What Cost”. What was the process of putting that together?

I really enjoy hearing different renditions and remixes of my favorite songs, so I knew I had to put together a deluxe single for "At What Cost" before the song even dropped! I wanted to create a fun and memorable experience for our early supporters so that's why I did a 25 CD limited run, complete with exclusive stickers, handwritten lyrics and a bestie bracelet! I love having the physical version of music, it is such a special memento to have. K-POP bands do such a great job with packaging their releases for their fans and it really creates another level to the music experience!

I really like the acoustic version of “At What Cost”. What made you want to record this version of the song?

Thank you so much, that means the world! The acoustic version of "At What Cost" is my favorite because it really makes you focus on how sad and cathartic the lyrics are. No happy beat or crazy cool electric guitar riffs to mask the sadness. And I love me a good sad song! haha

You released a music video for the song. What was the video shoot like and who came up with the concept for it?

I grew up being so inspired and influenced by Avril Lavigne and wanted to pay homage to her early videos for "Complicated" and "Sk8r Boi," you can totally feel the nostalgia from the LA rooftop moment! I produced the video and made the creative treatment for it as well! I brought in my good friend (and incredible photographer) Kelly Mason to direct and help keep the creative vision intact so I could focus on performing, as well as Alan Dang, my trusted director of photography and video editor! I am almost always working behind the scenes in video production so it was a cool change of pace and truly the best time of my life getting to be in my very own music video!

Can we expect more new music this year? What’s next for the band?

You can definitely expect more music from us! No hard dates yet, but keep your eyes peeled! What's next? More music, and hopefully some live shows soon!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?
