I recently had the opportunity to interview poptropicaslutz!. We discussed how the duo originally got together, their influences, their musical path since quarantine, their new song, “wonderkinz”, and more. Check it out below.

Thank you! Happy to be doing this with you guys!
Can you tell me how you got together and formed the group for those who may be unfamiliar? How did you initially become interested in music?
Well we were originally just a emo rap duo that came from being friends in high school then quarantine hit and we said f*ck it we should reinvent ourselves then we kinda became this emo pop punk boyband after revisiting alot of early 2000s emo sh*t. But we still needed a band name and one day we were hanging out in the car and Jonto screamed poptropicaslutz! and the rest is history.
You blend a few different genres together to get your sound. How did you find your sound and who are some of your biggest influences?
The biggest influences on my sound right now are prolly Fall Out Boy and Panic At The Disco cuz I just love the songwriting and melodies. Oh and Travis Scott sonically cuz I have a thing for autotune lol. Juice WRLD was one of my favs 2.
“I Miss 2007” is one of my favorite songs of yours. Can you tell me about writing the song and what some of your lyrical inspirations were when writing?
For 2007 I found the beat on youtube and up with the intro right away after this girl blocked me on every social media then sent it Jonto and he reflected my emotions flawlessly on the hook and verse then I went for an opposite approach on my verse to give the song this night and day element and it just worked.
Your new song, “wonderkinz*” just came out. What can you tell me about writing the song?
For wonderkinz we were with our boy Sam aka aldrch at his apartment where he’s got a studio and he played this crazy hyperpop beat and we just freestyled and punched it until the song was done and we prolly listened to it 1000x times that day and we were like nah this is a hit.
Will we hear more new music from you this year. Do you plan to keep releasing singles or do you have plans to release an EP or album at some point?
Definitely gonna drop more music this year. We are planning to do a collab ep with our friend aldrch called hyperpunk which is a mix of hyperpop and pop punk and definitely a ton of pop punk singles and we have a concept for our debut album titled “just in case the world ends”, but that’s for another day.
