All Hype - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview All Hype. We discussed the band’s origins, their EP, ‘Greetings From The Other Side’, creating music during the pandemic, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thank you for reaching out to us!

Can you tell us how you got together and formed the band for those who may be unfamiliar? How did you initially become interested in music?

Dom started with guitar hero then started playing music from a “teen center”. Alika and Dom started a band around 2016 called “Even Odders” and played shows with other band in the HAWAII scene. One of the bands we played with had Michael on drums called “strangers with kandy”. We eventually came together and decided we wanted more with our music and to tour and see how far we could get. That’s when we moved to Oregon around 2018 formed the All Hype you know.

Your EP ‘Greetings From The Other Side’ came out recently. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for the EP?

We tend to share songs we’ve written personally and collaborate together. We have a rule amongst ourselves that “Bangers Only” meaning it’s either gotta be great and we like it or we scrap it. Mike and Alika really do most of the lyrical sections and the strings, Dom will usually play a beat over as we jam the song out. We then take what we like from the jam session and fix it up, mold it into what we think is the best suit for the song and then BOOM! All Hype song.

How long did you work on it?

Around a year. We started around the same time we released out first EP “Misadventures”. We had the privilege to record drums at Hallowed Halls which took Dom only 4-5 hours to record and the rest was done with Tony Lenoci from Moose Dog Music at the Farm for a couple Months. Working with Tony is always a smooth, fun, educational process and provides growth in all our musical aspects.

The title for the EP is interesting. What is the meaning behind it?

“Greetings from the Other Side” is kind of a love letter to everyone that’s helped us out back home and here in the states. We pretty much moved here on a whim and have had so much support that we didn’t realize was possible within the two years that we’ve been a band.

Half-Blood Prince” is a favorite of mine from the EP. Can you tell me about writing that song specifically?

Alika: I wrote it originally to tell the bond I have with my little brother because he’s pretty much the person I care about the most and all I’ve got, but decided to make it relatable with references from one of my favorite series. While writing I saw Snape as myself in general because he helps Harry despite that Harry perceives him as no good scum. I personally tie that to myself because I don’t care if we’re friends or enemies, if you hate me or not, if you really need help then then I’ll be there for you and I don’t want or expect anything back. Plus I’m kind of a mysterious douche like Snape.

This has been a hard year for many and the pandemic has impacted the music community a lot. How are you coping? What was it like releasing the EP during this time?

We’ve been continuously working, recording, writing, Etc. We were bummed how this year has been for us, our friends, family and fans. Originally we were gonna release it earlier in the year before we went on tour then Covid happened and we held back thinking it was only gonna be a couple months. Then months later things weren’t looking great so we decided to release it anyway to send out positive vibes not really expecting the outstanding response we got from everyone. We try to keep positive through tough moments such as this year but, diamonds are made from constant pressure and if you can keep pushing everything will work out.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Thank to our family, friends and fans for the constant love and support. We’ve got new music we’ve been working on so keep updated with us on Facebook and Instagram at @allhypeband or on our website www.allhypeband.com. Stay safe and healthy, find something positive to keep yourself motivated, shows will come back and we’ll be there in full swing when they do.
