Robo Pumpkin - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the opportunity to interview Robo Pumpkin. We discussed their new album, ‘The Autumn Here’, their writing and recording process, lyrical inspiration, creating artwork, upcoming shows, and more. Check it out below.
Your new LP, ‘The Autumn Here’ is due out May 15th. What can you tell us about it so far and how are you feeling in the week leading up to the release?
I'm feeling a bit nervous but I'm excited for it to finally be out. We’ve been working on it for so long that I’m just very relieved to have it finished. I'm just hoping people like it as much as my other records even though it's a bit different.
What was the writing and recording process like for this release?
The process of making this record was the most disorganized of my projects so far, mainly due to me and my producer working out of state from each other for the first time. There would be a back and forth where I thought some songs were ready to be recorded and we would go to the studio, and I would realize they needed work. It really drew out the process but at a curtain point we locked in and got back into the flow of things and it started coming together.
You released “Wouldn’t You?” with the announcement. Can you tell us more about writing it specifically and why you chose it as the song with which to announce the album?
I think this song was a good 3rd single just because it's up beat and fun to listen to. I figured it would be a good warm up to the record. Wouldn't You? specifically was a tough song to finish. It seemed very sonically drawn out and it was hard to make it feel interesting for how long of a song it is, but we were able to figure it out after a lot of back and forth in the mixing process.
You explore love, loss, and time passing by amongst other themes on the album. Can you tell us more about exploring those themes through the seasons and your lyrics?
Anyone who lives in New England will understand what the feeling is like; Summer is fun, and autumn is good, but all you can think about is how once it ends you'll be miserable for the rest of the year…until summer rolls around. The album is about that, and how it can affect you and your loved ones.
Can you tell us more about the artwork?
The artwork was a vague aesthetic idea I had. I just wanted it to be a girl sitting with Converse on, but I didn't really have any other ideas. Me and the photographer Julia Harcourt walked around her parents house posing my girlfriend in different places until we found the one in the cover and decided it would be the one.
You have some shows coming up with worst party ever and camp ghost. How are you preparing for that and what are you most looking forward to about it?
I'm mainly preparing for the shows by running through my pedal board a lot. I'm very intimidated by the sonic variance in the new songs, and I really want that to shine through live. Most of the time I just run one or two pedals, mainly relying on my technique to carry my live performances; but I realize that I need to do more with my sound going forward, so we'll see how that goes.
Thanks for answering the questions. Is there anything else you want to add?
Thank you for your time, I hope you all like it!
