FOND Discuss 10 Favorite Artists of All Time

FOND recently released their new EP, We Can Hang. Check it out here and read what they had to say about ten of their favorite artists of all time below.

Dinosaur Jr

Dinosaur Jr paved the way for hardcore/punk inspired bands to play rock songs in E standard and with full chords. They’ve been a huge inspiration to us. Rob, who writes a lot of our music, learned guitar to play “Freak Scene”.

Teenage Fanclub

Teenage Fanclub’s debut LP “Bandwagonesque” is a perfect record, They took a lot of influence from Big Star but combined it with an alternative rock / grunge sound to create a masterpiece of songwriting. We were all lucky enough to see them a few years ago in DC.

Have Heart

One of the best hardcore bands of all time. Every song off both LPs is amazing. Pat Flynn’s lyrics are poetry and his delivery is incredible. Somehow, he managed to follow this up with another favorite ours, Fiddlehead.

Title Fight

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in a punk adjacent band today who wouldn’t list Title Fight as an influence. Every album showed such growth in terms of style, musicianship, and songwriting. Everything they put out is great and for different reasons. Rob and Chris saw them in Richmond with 50 people in 2009 and it shut down the venue.

Pavement

Every single Pavement record is worth spinning, which says a lot for a band of their breadth. Stephen Malkmus can walk a delicate line between saying something heartfelt without it sounding like he cares too much.

Hot Water Music

One of the best bands to ever do it. Chuck Ragan’s lyrics, vocal style, and riffs are timeless and have been a huge inspiration for all of us. No Division and Fuel for the Hate Game are incredible records.

Bad Brains

Most of us grew up around DC but were too young to know Bad Brains, let alone see them live, but they are to hardcore what Coltrane is to jazz. They were genre defining.

Samiam

Chris’s brother worked at Tower Records back in the day and bought him a Samiam record as a young lad. They got a bit overshadowed by other punk bands in the ’90s and have ended up a bit underappreciated but “Clumsy” is a great record.

Superdrag

“Sucked Out” was kind of a one-hit wonder at the time but “Regretfully Yours” rocks and is a record we take a lot of influence from. They combined power pop with some punk and grunge sensibilities in a really cool way. “Phaser” kicks ass.

The Beach Boys

What can you say. The most influential band maybe ever.
