When The Sun Sets - Sound In The Signals Interview

We recently had the opportunity to interview Zack Baumgartner of When The Sun Sets. We discussed the band’s new EP, Transparent, what’s next for the band, and more. Check it out below.

You recently released your EP ‘Transparent’. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for it?

The writing of this record was different from any other piece of work that we have released, specifically while in the writing process. In past releases, the writing process was started on an acoustic guitar in my bedroom (Zack Baumgartner, Vocals). While recording Transparent, we decided to start bringing the writing process to life in every single member. This record talks about all of our experiences versus only experiences of my own. The recording process has stayed the same throughout our career, working with Jarrett Pryzgoda at Kiwi Audio in Batavia, IL.

The album has a ton of energy, but you also find moments to let the EP breathe and slow down some. “Your Story Never Ends” is one of those moments. Can you tell me about writing that song specifically and where your head was at lyrically?

This song is centered around the family of our bassist, Noah Evert. Before Noah and his older brother Bailey came into this world, their parents had another child named Tyler. Tyler’s life was taken away before he was two years old in a tragic accident. This song is a tribute to Tyler and describes Noah’s feelings toward the tragedy. The song brings you into Noah’s life, missing the sibling that he was never able to meet.

There is a lot of really good lead guitar work on the songs. I like the overall sound of them and how they were produced and mixed. How long did you work on guitars for the album?

Being the primary writer in the band, I have always started the writing process on my guitar. The guitar has always been a very prevalent piece in our music. We approached the guitars the same way that we have since we started releasing music, and through Transparent we found the guitar tones that we have been striving for since the beginning.

What’s the meaning behind the artwork for the EP?

The white rose is the center of the album cover symbolizes a person with a life that is easy to live or “clean”. We associate this “cleanliness” with pure happiness, which is why the rest of the cover really brings it together. The black ink that is dripping off it symbolizes the hardships that we have faced in our lives throughout the writing process and the events that we faced before we began the writing process for this record.

You’ve been teasing that you’ve been working on some new music on Instagram. How have the songs been coming along? Has the state of the world and the pandemic impacted the process or these new songs at all?

We have some songs that have been finished for some time now that we have been waiting to release. We are working on the rest of the pieces that come along with the release of these songs and truly can’t wait to show them to you. The state of this world, though we are following precautions, hasn’t had a negative effect on our plans during this time in any other way than a delay in the delivery of their finished products. We are almost ready to release some new material, so be on the lookout!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

First, we want to thank you for giving us a platform to grow our music through. We truly appreciate the opportunity to tell you about the recent progress in the band, and we look forward to releasing them to everybody soon! Make sure to give us a follow on our social media platforms (@whenthesunsetil) to stay up to date on everything that our band is working on. Thanks again!
