Promise of Redemption - 'Where You Ought To Be' (EP Review)

Promise Of Redemption has pretty much always been a vehicle to showcase Shane Henderson's vocal ability and lyrical prowess. At least that's how I've felt when I listen to Promise Of Redemption's releases. That's still pretty much the case for this new EP, Where You Ought To Be. Vocally he shines in the same way he has across his various other releases, but there are also some pretty neat sounding musical moments on this EP that I'm really enjoying, as well. I like the mix of acoustic tracks and more full band songs. It gives the EP a few different moods and balances it out really nicely.

The title track has some really interesting, wobbly sounding guitars in the beginning of the song that opens it. It transitions into an almost 90s alternative radio rock sound. "Stuck In The Cement" has some interesting opening music that has this light pop/rock appeal. The song sounds like a really poppy version of Valencia. The music might take a couple listens to fully get into, but when it clicked with me the song is enjoyable. I like a lot of the guitar parts in the song. They are extremely catchy. I really like the lyrics on this one as well.

"With Open Arms" is a nice acoustic song. I like the lyrics and it's one of the best vocal performances on the EP. "Live In Your Name" ends with a bouncy, kind of southern feeling that serves as the outro and ends it on a good sounding note that fades out nicely. It's always a nice reminder when an artist like this releases an EP. I (and I'm sure many others) believe Valencia never truly got their dues for making some killer records. EPs like this are a reminder that these artists garnered a large cult following for a reason. There's a lot of emotion and somber moments on Where You Ought To Be, but they feel more like a celebration. Overall, I think the lyrics on the EP have a really good, thoughtful message. This is a solid EP, full of really good songs, and it's definitely worth checking out!
