Mellowhigh - Mellowhigh (Album Review)

(Note: This was reviewed from the stream that is currently out.)

Basically this is Mellowhype with Domo Genesis. I'm not sure if this is a one time collaboration or if it will be an ongoing project that we will see future projects from. With all that in mind I was more than interested to hear this album. Mellowhype's albums have been pretty good overall. Last year’s Numbers showed the duo of Hodgy Beats and Left Brain making another fairly good album. Though still not quite as good as BlackenedWhite, but it was still noteworthy. With Mellowhigh the addition of Domo Genesis has added a lot to the mix. Domo is one of the more well known members of Odd Future, but up until this point he still had yet to have a really big standout project. Teaming up with Hodgy and Left Brain has given him that vehicle and the trio shine with one of the better hip hop albums I've heard this year.

One thing I think is great about the project is that I heard some people complaining about the formula of Mellowhype's Numbers and how it sounded stale. With this release and bringing in Domo Genesis it really adds a lot to the aesthetic of the songs. It's a really solid album from the beats to the rapping. "Yu" the standard and remix featured on the album are really standout tracks and really catchy. I think I prefer the remix to the original, but both versions are good. The beat for "Get'n Drunk" is really cool and stands as one of my favorite beats on the album. "Nobody" is another track with a great beat and some really great rapping. It's a really well put together song and I wouldn't be surprised if this was a big fan favorite song.

A few other Odd Future members show up on the album. Earl Sweatshirt shows up on "Cold World." Any track Earl is featured on seems to be automatically enhanced by his presence. His feature is really good here as well and he continues to be one, if not the most, impressive member of Odd Future. Tyler, The Creator shows up on the remix of "Yu" and his addition to the remix is really good. Honestly what Odd Future album wouldn't benefit from having the groups defacto leader show up for a feature?

Overall I think this is just as good, if not better than Mellowhype's Numbers, and it's also a really strong performance from Domo Genesis. This has been a big year for Odd Future whose core members continue to release well received albums. If you're a fan of Odd Future this continues the trend of strong releases from the collective. This is all around a pretty good rap album.
