Road Trip - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the opportunity to interview Road Trip. We discussed how they started the band, their new EP ‘Tower Twelve’, favorite moments from the EP, artwork, and more. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview.
No prob, thanks for thinking of us!
Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you first become interested in music?
I, Caden Cantwell, and our drummer, Alex Straniere, started out by writing a lot of our first album at his house. We had a lot of different friends filling in on bass and lead guitar for a while until we got perminant members, John Mariano (bass) and Ralston Turcotte (lead guitar). Our foundation of the band is just playing as many shows as we can, the world is so big and there’s so many people who have no idea they like a genre until they’re introduced to it. I personally became interested in music by watching live performances on YouTube of bands like blink-182 and Green day. I made it my goal when learning to play guitar to be able to play “Good Riddance” by Green Day.
Your new EP ‘Tower Twelve’ came out recently. Have you been pleased with the response it’s been getting so far? How do you feel now that it’s out?
We are very happy with the way this EP turned out. Friends and fans of ours have been very nice to send us messages of their favorite songs on the record and that always feels great to read those. It feels really great to have the record now and we’re excited to play songs like “Jordan” and “Daydream” live since we’ve never played them before. We’re extremely excited to have our first show since the drop coming up soon.
What was the writing and recording process like for the EP?
We had a ton of fun recording this. Our first album “Off-Duty Millionaire” felt slightly more stressful to record only because we didn’t have any music out yet and it felt like there was a bit of pressure we put on ourselves. We also got the privallge to record with Max Kuehn, the drummer of one of our favorite bands, Fidlar. He did an amazing job producing/engineering and he recognized our vision very quickly. We went in with bits and pieces of each song but not a full idea. We never want to get too attached to an idea so that we can explore new sounds.
I really like the song “Jordan”. At what point in the writing process was that song written and what is your inspiration for the lyrics?
Thank you for saying that! That was actually the last song from this EP. I, Caden, made the lead guitar line on my acoustic guitar and that was the beginning of it. Most of this EP is about seeking a romantic relationship and the theme of this song is the feeling of “tonight’s the night I’m going to tell my crush how I feel about them”. We had the chorus fully thought out but actually recorded the chorus and verses on different days becuase we hadn’t come up with verses we were happy with yet.
Do you have a favorite musical moment or lyrics from the album? Why?
My favorite moment has to do with “Off-Duty Millionaire.” I got home from a night out, put my headphones in, and listened to the final mix of that song over and over with the biggest smile across my face. I enjoy all the songs a lot but that and “Daydream” are my two favorites.
The artwork for the album fits the mood of the music really nicely. Who came up with the concept for it and designed it?
Thank you! My uncle took a photo of that lifeguard tower in San Diego about 10 years ago on a family trip. We got the photo and made some arrangements and edits to it to match the sound of “Tower Twelve”.
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you want to add?
If you’re looking for shows get involved in the scene!!!
Thanks so much for the interview!! And thank you for the kind words about the EP!
