Summer Stars - Sound In The Signals Interview
| 📸 Kayla Esquivel |
I recently had the opportunity to interview Summer Stars. We discussed what inspired the band, their new song, plans for more music, and more. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview.
Thank you for taking the time to check us out and ask to chat!
Can you tell me how you got together and formed the band? What or who are some of your biggest influences?
We've all been friends between 15-20 years and have played music with each other in different capacities in that time. A few years ago I decided I wanted to make unapologetically 2000s emo and post-hardcore but without it being nostalgia bait. I decided to ask my friends who also grew up with this kind of music to help me bring the vision to fruition. Influences are for sure all over the place but a few would be Matchbook Romance, Boys Night Out and Taking Back Sunday (our name is an old demo song title).
You recently released your new song “This Is Side One, Flip Me Over”. Have you been pleased with the response it’s received so far?
Absolutely grateful for all the kind words. We wanted to have a more straight forward song after our last ep was comparatively not as heavy, to showcase our range of influence. It's a really fun song.
Is the song title a reference to the Fall Out Boy lyric? If so, what inspired you about it?
Yes, it is! I have always enjoyed when bands had long drawn out song titles. This song used imagery of a broken record to convey staying in a toxic life situation and finally leaving it. The song title is a record reference so I thought it would be cool.
Can you tell me about writing the song?
I had the primary hooks written, the rest of the instrumentals were built alongside, came alongside and as the lyrics fell into place, I realized how I really wanted to convey the pipeline of self-sabotage keeping you stuck in something to empowering yourself to break free and the metaphor of being a record coincided with that.
Where did you record it at? What was the recording process like for it?
Our very talented bass player Duncan recorded and produced this song in his studio, tinkering every step of the way. Thankfully because of that intimacy we were able to be nitpicky.
Can we expect more new music this year? Is there any chance that you’re working on an album or EP? If so, what can you tell us so far?
We will likely share another song this year and we are going into the studio late August to track our next record with Adam Cichocki and we could not be more inspired.
Your ‘Self-Titled’ EP came out last year. Is there any chance that we’ll see a physical release for that such as CDs, cassettes, or vinyl?
We would love to do a run of physical media, just want to figure out the semantics of other priorities first.
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you want to add?
Thank you again for checkin us out and being interested enough to interview! As for anything to add, find us everywhere at @summerstarsemo to stay updated on our projects we move forward!
