Boys Lie - Sound In The Signals Interview
| 📸 @klausburkhart |
I recently had the opportunity to interview Boys Lie. We discussed their new song, “Supercrush”, artwork, their upcoming EP, and more. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview.
Thank you so much for reaching out to us again. Really appreciate the time you take out of your day to give us a platform. Really love what you do.
You recently released your new song “Supercrush”. Can you tell me about writing it?
Supercrush is just a personal love song I wrote about my partner. At first it was kinda challenging to even write a more positive/cheerful sounding song like this because I’ve never really wrote a song like that before. I’m just lucky enough to have been a fan of power pop bands like Teenage Fanclub, Weezer, Ozma, Superdrag and Supercrush (which the song is named after) to help me hone in that style of songwriting. All it took was getting that opening guitar hook down and the rest of the song fluently came together. I always appreciate when a song doesn’t fight me on getting written. Makes my life so much more easier.
Do you have a favorite lyric or musical moment from it? Why?
Honestly, has to be those harmonies in the choruses and that beautiful outro we created. I had the idea of that outro for a long time because I really wanted to give homage to the band Teenage Fanclub. They’ve done the fake out which then leads into a big extravagant outro. So I got to give a big thanks to Nik for helping me figure out that outro because then we were able to do so, we got those guitar solos in as well. So cool how we both play guitar very differently but have a huge love for rocking solos!
The guitar sounds great. What equipment did you use to capture that sound?
So to make things easier we do all guitars and bass with DI. With how good the newer interfaces and plugins are, it just makes tweaking tones and sounds so much more accessible. I don’t remember what plugins we used because that’s all what our friend Tone knows since he did the engineering, mixing and mastering for us. I personally just did guitar straight to DI, while Nik and Esteban did their guitar and bass to their pedalboard then into DI. Really solidifies their personality as players.
I really like the song a lot. It is in a slightly different direction from the two songs you released on the split with Dry Spell. Is this what people can expect from your upcoming music sonically?
I’ve always looked at my songwriting to be whatever I’m in the mood to write and be inspired by. Never be afraid to try new things or just have fun and be challenged as a songwriter or musician. So honestly I think you can always expect the emo pop punk songs from Boys Lie. Just don’t be surprised when we try new things or do something different because that’s the main reason we chose Supercrush as our first single. Giving everyone a taste of what we can do without limiting ourselves.
I really like the artwork. It reminds me of vintage Hellogoodbye and The Format designs. What was your inspiration for it?
We love the artwork too! Done by our amazing artist @secretlymeaty who always hears me out on my concepts and takes them in to a whole other level of artistic expression. Those two bands weren’t in mind, but I can fully see what you mean because the concept was definitely in line to be similar. What really inspired it was just the album art for Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub. The single item in frame with a pinkish background was what created my idea of just a flower and a background. Simplicity with beautiful colors as its finest.
I know you’ve been in the studio recently. Can we expect more singles, an EP, or potentially an album anytime soon? If so, what can you tell us so far?
Definitely an EP from us. Just four rocking songs from four rocking dudes. That’s pretty much it honestly. It’s going to have fan favorites on it, my personal favorite and I’d say our newest song in it as well. So just be patient because it’ll be out sooner than you think.
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you want to add?
Just a big thank you to our fans, friends and family. Thanks to Tone for doing the amazing engineering, mixing and mastering work on Supercrush. Thanks to Ortzi, Esteban and Nik for being in the band. Thanks to Alex my partner who also does all our amazing artwork. Finally a last thanks to any and everyone who has listened to Supercrush because without you there wouldn’t be a reason to keep making music.
