Static - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Static. We discussed how they formed the band, musical influences, their writing and recording process, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

No problem, thanks for reaching out!

Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you become interested in music?

I got into hardcore and screamo in like 8th grade (like 2020ish) and started going to shows a year or two later and I absolutely loved the energy. I was instantly hooked. I was already playing guitar so I knew I wanted to start a band pretty soon after going to my first shows. Several years and several failed projects later, I met our drummer TJ in our high school homeroom class. We started talking about hardcore and stuff and I asked him if he was into screamo and he said yeah, so we talked about Catalyst for a while. He invited me to join a project with him and that later turned into Static after a few changes in lineup.

I really like the sound of the band. What are some of your influences sonically?

I know Eddie takes a lot of inspiration from Evergreen Terrace and 7 angels 7 plagues, he's the mastermind behind the guitar parts. Idk too much about the others. I mean we don't necessarily talk about our influences with each other, but we send each other a lot of recommendations which I'm sure rubs off on our combined sound. I know I take a lot of inspiration for the singing parts from emo bands like Saosin, Underoath, and the bits of singing on Poison the Well. For screams, I do lots of high stuff like Jacob Bannon from Converge or Jaden from bulletsbetweentounges.

You recently released your ‘Self-Titled’ EP. Can you tell me about writing and recording the EP?

We had Forgetting and part of another song, I can't remember which one, written during last summer, but they were never fully formed because I left for college out of state. When I came back though we worked on those and wrote 3 more songs. I always kinda freestyle some stream of consciousness shit over Tj and Eddie's jams and then later I listen to recordings and polish the lyrics. After that part got done we began recording. All of our recording gets done at Eddie's house, all diy, no labels, no producer. Just Eddie basically and then I throw his ideas here and there but it's hella raw.

I really like the song “Vacation”. At what point in the EP process was that song written? What was your  lyrical inspiration for it?

Vacation was one of the newer songs on the EP. I wrote it about a girl haha. It was kinda about someone giving you a taste of what could be a beautiful relationship but then for whatever reason things don't work so now you're kinda left holding on to that good part at the begining and yearning for that. A lot of the songs on the EP are similar. It was reflective of a particular time in my life for sure.

Can we expect a physical release for the album? Is there any chance that you’ll release CDs, cassettes, or vinyl at any point?

I would love to release physicals at some point. The issue is none of us are really financially equipped for that rn. If a label reached out to do something with us I'd definitely say yes, but I'm sure no label would want us because of how infrequent our shows are. It doesn't really matter to me like I have no ambition to but if there is demand we could think about it.

You’ve been playing some shows. How have fans responded to the songs live? What’s your favorite part of performing live?

I think people like the new stuff, we tried to keep the sort of abnormal aspect to our sound, but made it a little heavy not completely falling into metalcore which I think is what makes us appealing. We've heard only good things at the shows which is awesome. We super appreciate the support. I think my favorite part is just how in the zone I get. Nothing else really matters while playing live and it's awesome to just get in your head and have fun. I love performing for being such a powerful outlet for emotion and art especially in hardcore/emo.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you want to add?

Thank you for interviewing me/us! Stream the new EP!!! Come say hi at shows, tell us what you think of the EP, we're all super chill. Even if you don't like our music, come tell us why it sucks. Shout out Seattle hardcore/emo. Come play Seattle, hit us up maybe we'll be available lol. Static is friendship and love.
