Low Action - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Low Action. We discussed the writing and recording process for their upcoming EP, lyrical inspiration, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thank YOU :)

You recently released your ‘Runnin’ Reds’ double single and you also have a new EP coming out November 23rd. What was the writing and recording process like for the EP?

Some of the songs were already half-written before the band was formed because Matt (lead guitar) and I (Silvio, singer/rhythm) have been jamming together for years writing stuff for fun that never went anywhere. This band was us FINALLY getting to use some riffs/ideas we’ve tinkered with since probably 2018. Theres a song on the EP called “Stranger”, and I literally have a video on my personal instagram of me singing the chorus to that in 2018/19. So it’s pretty crazy to me that that song is gonna be out for real all this time later. Other than that, I come up with hooks and just loose ideas usually, and jam it with the rest of the band and they give their input and add their flair. It’s pretty open so if anyone has ideas we go with it.

Funny enough I met Ryan (bass) and Jake (drums) at a new job I started working at, and I was trying to write hardcore with them. We wrote some really good stuff, but couldn’t find a vocalist, so we put that on hold lol. Shortly after, Matt started working there too and we finally decided to get together and jam some different stuff, and it’s been great honestly. I personally am stoked and grateful cus they are all great players and fun to jam with.

Who did you record the EP with and what did they bring to it?

I actually tracked/engineered everything on this. With the help of Ryan, who also has a bit of experience home recording as well. We did it all DIY, and not gonna lie it was pretty stressful and a huge learning curve lol. I’m sure an experienced engineer would vomit if they saw my Reaper file haha, but I did my best and I’m happy with it. I would say I basically acted as producer as well, but the songs are fairly raw and exactly how we play them live for the most part, so all I did was add harmonies and some cool effects here and there for “production value”, which saying feels like stolen valor as someone with zero production knowledge haha.

Why did you choose “Runnin’ Reds” and “Next In Line” to be the first two singles?

To be honest, we just wanted to put music out ASAP and those were the first two catchy songs we had done. That AND I already had artwork started that went with the song “Runnin’ Reds” so we just went with it.

Do you think these songs are a good representation of what we’ll hear on the EP? What can listeners expect?

I think so, however these two songs are more upbeat. The EP will have a couple sad songs that are about things like losing friends/loved ones, longing for old friends/memories, failing relationships, etc. I think listeners can expect equally catchy songs, but maybe just a little more serious and real. I hope lol.

I really like “Runnin’ Reds”. It’s really well written and the chorus is super catchy. Can you tell me about writing that song in particular?

Thank you! It’s funny you say that because I thought it was structured kinda ignorantly with no bridge or anything haha. Sometimes I come up with a hook at random, and all of a sudden I have a manic episode and must complete the song or I won’t sleep haha. So that happened, and then I brought it to the band and they helped tighten it up and make it what it is.

I drive like an asshole and I run red lights every day. I came up with the hook “I’ve been running reds and losing all the races in my head” in my car one day rushing home from work and felt like it was a funny metaphor for maybe anxiety or imposter syndrome. I didn’t think it out too much, I hoped to leave it open to interpretation.

You’re set to release another song this week. What can you tell us about “Sentimental”?

I started writing “Sentimental” the day I found out a friend of mine back home in New Jersey passed away. It hit me hard, and I was swarmed with feelings of nostalgia and desperate longing to return to a chapter of my life that has long been closed. Every time I go back to my hometown, I end up driving around and looking at places I used to frequent, and seeing how they changed is heartbreaking sometimes.

The chorus of the song references the house I lived in with my friends before I moved to CA. It was one of the best periods of my life, and when I drive past it now, it’s almost cinematic the way I see ghost-like scenes taking place in/around the house of us still living there.

Do you have plans to release a physical release for the EP such as CDs, cassettes, or vinyl? Are physical releases important to your band?

Willmore Records was actually kind enough to put out a cassette for us that hopefully will be available by the day of the EP release show on the 23rd. Physical media is very important to us, and we have talked about CDs, but as of right now the cassettes with Willmore Records are all we have in the works.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for hitting us up so promptly the day our single came out! I really appreciate it. And not much more to add other than we have a TON more music written that we are working on and we hope to put it out soon as well.
