The Ritornello Form - Sound In The Signals Interview

📸 @untitled_.iii

I recently had the opportunity to interview The Ritornello Form. We discussed their split release with Stella, lyrical inspiration, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thanks for having us! This is only our second ever interview, and it still blows my mind that people even care enough to ask us questions about our stuff, but that’s pretty cool, so thanks lol.

You recently released your new split with Stella. How did it work out for you to do a split with them? How did you go about planning which songs to add?

It’s all thanks to Abby, honestly. She knew all the Stella bros before any of us. I don’t know exactly how it came up, but I guess she had shown them some of our demos, and they rocked with it and asked if we wanted to do a split. The rest is history. As for planning what songs to put on there, we wrote Weight of Too Many specifically for the split, Off By One Again on the other hand had been a song we had written before a bit prior. We just felt it matched the vibe of what we wanted for the split and complemented Weight of Too Many so well, so we threw it on there.

These are the first two songs you’ve officially released. How do you think the response has been to the songs so far?

The response has been so great. I knew these songs were special to us, but to hear all these kind words and see so many people enjoy something that we put so much of ourselves into, it’s a great feeling, and we couldn’t ask for anything more.

What was the writing and recording process like for the songs on that split?

As I previously mentioned, we had Off By One Again a bit prior to knowing we were gonna do this split, but that’s actually a really cool song because it’s the first one we wrote with Axel as our drummer. Before that, it was Abby on drums, so I guess that’s a cool little fun fact. Everything for the split along with our upcoming album was written and recorded at Aden’s apartment. It’s been a really cool experience being able to do everything DIY with some of my best friends. Nothing’s rushed, just all fun and vibes. Shoutout Axel again, he’s basically been our at-home producer handling all the recording.

I really like “Weight of Two Too Many”. Can you tell us more about writing that song specifically? What was your lyrical inspiration?

Weight of Two Too Many, the instrumentals at least, started off by me (Elijah) bringing a bassline I wrote. I pretty much had the whole song structured in my head before, but I can’t play anything else but bass for shit, so we all jammed on it until it sounded good enough to record. It was also written and recorded probably like one or two weeks before we left on tour with We’retheCurrency and Stella. It was a lot, but we got it done. Lyrically, Abby was the mastermind behind that. As for her exact vocal inspiration I’m not too sure, but I know for sure we’ve all been pretty inspired by good ol’ 90s emo. I know Abby is particularly a fan of bands like jejune, Ee, and Rainer maria.

Abby: The lyrics for that song are rlly important to me personally, and my inspiration was definitely just taken from growing up and learning from the mistakes that I’ve continued to beat myself up on as I’ve grown up. I used to walk around a spot in a hometown of mine Santa Cruz and just contemplate the things in my life and jump into the water and let all those feeling release as soon as I was in it. Just taking those experiences with me when I’m dealing with stuff and writing about is my new therapy and it’s so freakin’ awesome that people enjoy or can even resonate with that song. :)

Is there any chance that we’ll see a physical release for the EP such as cassettes, CDs, or vinyl?

Yeah, actually, we’re gonna have CDs and tapes coming soon through Milkcrate. Not too sure about vinyl yet, but I would love to do that in the future.

You’re also teasing an album coming soon. What can you tell me about that so far?

It’s in the works for sure. We want it to be perfect, so I can’t say exactly when it’ll be out, but we’re putting a lot of love in.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

We love everyone who has ever shown us support in any way, and we truly appreciate everything. This band has honestly been the coolest experience ever, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. #2ndwaveisbackbabayyyy
