Guilt - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Guilt. We discussed how they started the band, their love for the hardcore scene, their new EP, cover art, releasing physical media, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Of course, this is our first interview, so we are honored to be apart of it.

Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you become interested in music?

The band started in December of 2022 with our current vocalist and Cash, one of our guitar players. Since then, we've gone through many changes with our sound and some members, but we started playing music again in December of last year. Our current lineup is Fin on vocals, Cash on guitar/vocals, August on guitar, and Jane "The Bucket" Jenkins on drums. As for when we became interested in the music scene, it’s kinda hard to answer cause we've all had our unique journeys. One thing that remains the same is that we all come from our local hardcore scenes and have been going to hardcore shows and loving the culture for a long time.

You just released your EP. What was the writing and recording process like for it?

Both of our guitarists write riffs and bring them to practice, our drummer lays some beats, and we discuss and jam them out as a group. We worked with Elliott at Soundhouse Studios, recording live. We wanted to record it that way because we feel that a live recording captures a specific moment in time, and we wanted our emotions to show on the EP.

Do you have a song from the EP that you’re particularly excited for people to hear and why?

Our third song, My Marionette. We're excited for people to hear it recorded because we think it stands out sonically from our other songs. We feel like we wrote instrumentals that complemented the story that our vocalist wanted to express. We're excited for the lyrics to come out!

The cover artwork for the EP is really cool. Who designed it and came up with the concept for it?

Thank you! We collaborated with our friend Sully, and he helped us create a visual of the atmosphere that we want to portray with our music. We sat in his infinite library of obscure design books from the 70s - 90s and made a big selection of the style we wanted to pursue. Over time, we eventually found what we wanted and went with it! He also helped us with our tour flyer!

Can you tell us more about the meaning behind the artwork?

We had been talking about taking a more modern approach with our designs for a while now, and wanted to wait till the ep came out to debut the new style. We wanted to include aspects of retrofuturism and club/electronic to give a clean/inviting look. As for the design specifically, we liked how the three core figures in the art mix together, almost to tell a story of its own.

Can we expect a physical release of the EP such as cassettes, CDs, or vinyl? How important is having physical media to you?

Physical media is VERY important to us as a band. We have some CDs and cassettes in the works for this EP as of right now, and we should have some physical versions of the EP on our tour! We would also love to get the chance to do vinyl eventually!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you again for interviewing us! This is our first time doing something like this, and it feels very special to have the opportunity to talk about the project. We're working on writing our album right now, and we are excited to start teasing some newer songs and eventually release them! We're also going on a little run to Cali, and we're very excited to see friends and new places.
