The Others Like Us - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview The Others Like Us. We discussed how they signed with Thumbs Up Records, the importance of having physical releases, their EP ‘It Takes Time’, when to expect new music, supporting your local scene, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thanks! We are humbled you to ask!

You recently announced that you signed with Thumbs Up Records. How did it work out for you to sign with the label? What made it the right fit for your band?

Yeah! We're honored to be a part of the Thumbs Up family! We played a show in Chicago and the head of the label was in the audience and they reached out not long after being interested in working with us. We immediately said yes because we're huge fans of all the other bands on the label so it really was no brainer for us!

Thumbs Up released a cassette for your EP ‘It Takes Time.’ How important is physical media like vinyl, cassettes, etc… to your band?

When we started this band, one of the goals that we thought was impossible to reach was to have our music be released in a physical format. So having Thumbs Up come to us with wanting to put our most personal music out, it really was a dream come true and a huge goal for us.

The EP was released earlier in the year. Have you been pleased with the response so far? How does it feel now that it’s been out for a while?

When we were working on the EP, we never thought that we would ever get the response that we have received. So to say the least, we've been ecstatic about the response. With having the EP out for a while now, it feels like we're starting to get a foot in the door for the larger DIY/midwest emo community and being able to play shows in cities we've never been to before because of the EP has been incredible.

What or who were some of your biggest sonic influences for the EP?

Bands like PUP, Glocca Morra, Anxious, Youth Novel, and The Hotelier were huge influences on us when we were writing/recording the EP sonically. We could go on for a few hours and list all the midwest emo/skramz/post hardcore bands that influenced our songwriting, but those 5 were the largest.

You recently released “Shoes (The Sneaker Song)” in October. Can you tell me about recording that song?

We were hit up by our friends Ven and Quinn about being a part of a cover series called "Osoween" where they had 25 different DIY bands cover a song by Oso Oso. We just were lucky enough that no one snagged Shoes before us lol.

Can we expect more new music anytime soon? If so, what can you tell us so far?

Absolutely! We're working on a three-way split with our close friends from OKC that we're planning on putting out by the end of the year!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

We seriously appreciate you guys for reaching out to us! Only thing I want to add is that everyone should support their local scene. We got our start because we went to shows and realized that there are bands in our city that are making the music we were fans of. You never know if you're going to find your next favorite band.
