Cheer Up Dusty - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Justin Humenik of Cheer Up Dusty. We discussed when he got his first guitar, the band’s newest single, “Shirtless and Afraid”, songwriting, lyrical inspiration, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Of course! Thanks for taking your time for us.

I saw on Instagram that you posted a picture of a band you were in from 2006 for a throwback photo. What’s the story behind that photo? How did you initially become interested in music?

Throwbacks are always fun. I came across that a jokes how my hair more or less looks the same. / I got my first guitar for my 12th birthday after finding an interest in punk rock.

I’ve also read that at one point you considered giving up on creating music. What made you want to continue?

Yeah, I just had parted a band and had a moment of doubt. But I can’t stop; I just can’t.

Can you tell me how you got together and formed Cheer Up Dusty for anyone who may be unfamiliar?

I wrote the first EP and recorded it with my friend Nick then asked Patty to be in a video then he joined and we luckily found Brayan and Paul mid 2020 and we’ve been working as a full band since.

You just released your newest single “Shirtless and Afraid”. Can you tell me about the writing process for the song?

The music in shirtless Patty wrote he told me in 2014. I heard it when he was showing me demos and it became my favorite right away. He let me write words over it and it came out well.

What was the lyrical inspiration for it? What advice would you give to someone who is feeling the way you were when you wrote it?

Yeah, ya know the past year’s been a weird one and I’ve had a bit more anxiety than normal ha and overthinking and I guess wasn’t feeling very proud of myself but at some point it’s “how hard am I really being on myself”. My advice? I’m not sure I’m one to give advice really but if you feel like me I guess find your outlet whatever it may be and go neck deep into it (pun intended).

Do you usually start with music or lyrics when writing songs?

Mostly music then lyrics, but not always. Now we’re writing together and I’m writing words while playing with the fellas which I’m not used to but ya know trying new things. I’m used to writing lyrics in private.

What’s coming up for the band this year? Will we hear more new music?

More songs this year for sure.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

We appreciate your and your listeners time! Give us a listen and when the world opens up we’ll see yous out there! Stay safe.
