Good Charlotte - Makeshift Love (Song Review)

I would consider myself both a fan and a heavy critic of Good Charlotte. I can remember a time when they were a pop/punk band on the rise with their self-titled album and their video for "Little Things" was receiving some minor play on TV. I can also remember when some of my friends and I genuinely enjoyed their self-titled album. I also enjoyed quite a few songs off their sophomore album, The Young And The Hopeless. While I was somewhat lukewarm, overall, on that sophomore album I did enjoy parts of it and over time it carries some pretty heavy nostalgia for me and it is still a fun listen. The band started losing my interest around that time and as their career progressed they lost it even more. I would always continue to check their stuff out and enjoy occasional singles, but I had low expectations. I went into "Makeshift Love" not expecting much just because the band really hasn't delivered anything I've truly felt was standout in years.

I will say that it's nice to be pleasantly surprised. "Makeshift Love" is a pretty exceptional single. It basically takes most aspects of what people enjoyed about those first couple of GC albums and wipes away some of the bad taste of the last three albums. Like I said they can sometimes deliver a good song but then the album has a bunch of songs that I don't like. However, I'm hoping they're going to produce a follow-up album of catchy, fun pop/punk tunes in the style of this new single.

This single delivers the nostalgia factor pretty well while also presenting the band as something that could really be viable in 2015. Maybe Benji and Joel's recent writing sessions with 5 Seconds Of Summer has helped the band rock back towards what fans initially enjoyed. Whatever happened between Cardiology and now has helped the band write one of their best songs, if not their best song, since The Young And The Hopeless. This is a fun song and if you want to reminisce about some of those early 2000s pop/punk songs while enjoying something new and fresh then you should definitely check this out!
