False Start - Sound In The Signals Interview

📸 @nate_photOs

I recently had the opportunity to interview False Start. We discussed their name change, new song “Out of Place”, artwork, when to expect more music, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Of course, thanks for talking to us.

You recently announced a change in your band’s name from Nervous Kids to False Start. What made you decide to change your name?

Nervous Kids was a bedroom project I started on my own and over the years it’s evolved into something very different and we all sensed it was time to differentiate that project from the band we are now. I’m grateful for everything Nervous Kids was, but it’s exciting to move into this next era of the band.

What’s the significance behind it that made you choose False Start?

We were pitching potential names for a few weeks before agreeing on “False Start”. Our bassist Brandon was the one that suggested the name. Originally it was “Another False Start” taken from the chorus of “Another Second Chance” by the rock band Rocket.

You have a new song coming out called “Out of Place”. Can you tell me about writing and recording it?

This was the most collaborative we’ve ever been on a song. Most songs in the past would stay pretty similar to my original demo, but we really dissected the instrumental and pushed it to be the best we could make it. I did two versions of lyrics which I hadn’t done before, I kept my original verses but the chorus was entirely different than the first pass. We worked with Shawn Sullivan for the first time recording it and he really pushed all of us to get the best performance possible. We’re stoked on how it came out.

Sonically, do you think the song is a good representation of what we can expect from the band moving forward?

Yes and no. It feels like a good representation of where we’re at at the moment, but our sound continues to evolve as we keep writing.

I think the artwork for the single is really neat. Who designed it and came up with the concept for it? Is there any meaning behind it?

Glad you like it! We worked with the artist @wijaseta who we found from their artwork they did with our friends in Dally. We were inspired by the art style of a lot of classic pop-punk and referenced some artwork from Neck Deep while coming up with it. I sent over some artwork references with our song and lyrics and the artist came up with the concept.

Is there any chance that you’re working on an EP or album or is this more of a single? If so, what can you tell us so far?

Yeah, we recorded a short 3 song EP and this is the first single from it. Can’t announce much yet but we’ll be dropping the other songs sporadically throughout the rest of the year.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you want to add?

Thanks for streaming the new single and our next show is in Fontana on August 21st. You can find all the info on our Instagram page @falsestartca
