Overthinker - Sound In The Signals Interview

Amanda

I recently had the opportunity to interview Overthinker. We discussed the writing and recording process for new song, “Late Again”, collaborating with Glazed, filming the video for the song, when to expect new music, the potential for their music to be released physically, comparisons to The Starting Line, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Hey, no need to thank us! We appreciate you being interested in hearing about our band!! So, thank you!

You recently released your new song “Late Again”. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for the song?

So, this song was such an interesting one for us to come together the way it did, because it almost felt like a weird anomaly of fate where everything just fell into place. We had been working on maybe close to a dozen new song ideas, some of them that will probably end up being future releases, and some of them, maybe not so much because we had been feeling… more or less, stumped on how to finish them. Randomly we just ended up deciding to revisit this other demo that almost ended up in the “scrap it” folder and decided we would strip it down and make it fresh, which was the demo for the start of Late Again

So here we are, basically starting with that main riff in the intro, and we just started vibing on ideas in the room together, and within maybe an hour or two we had rewrote the whole song just like that.

It’s hard to fully explain how it happened, we just all were on the same wavelength and everyone kept coming up with ideas on what to do next. The energy in the room was just great that day and it just happened the way it needed to!

The song features Glazed. How did it work out for them to be on the song?

So Glazed are actually some good friends of ours, we’ve played with them a bunch and we’re all good friends with the guys in the band. I actually love the way it happened, because I actually send Justin the demo of the song pretty much a day or two after we had rewrote the song to see what he thought of it. And after talking about it and what he liked about it, we kindof just ended up agreeing that it would be awesome to get him to sing on the bridge for us.

It ended up coming out so perfect, we gave him full creative freedom to write whatever he wanted, and I think the line “I’m overthinking when I’m glazed before the sun comes up” was just too perfect. Sometimes it comes off a little cheesy to mention your band names in songs, but it adds a fun lighthearted vibe to the song nodding to the fact that this is just a fun Overthinker x Glazed collab in a song, while also still being a super solid lyric if you had no association to the band names.

What inspired the lyrics for “Late Again”? Was there anything specific?

I think it’s pretty self-explanatory, but it’s just about being late to things! Having ADHD I’m cursed with something referred to as being Time Blind. I lose track of time super easily by being side tracked, and it’s never on purpose. But it almost always sets me back to the point where I’m the guy always late to work, family get together, social gatherings… you name it.

I meant it in a pretty lighthearted self acknowledgement type of deal, but sometimes it does feel pretty frustrating when people in my life get upset with me for being late and insist that I didn’t care or did it on purpose. Maybe it’s selfish and careless of me to be late, but I never do it on purpose and always feel super terrible about it when it happens.

You also released a video for the song. What was the video shoot like? Do you have a favorite moment from it?

The video shoot was absolutely incredible, we were incredibly lucky to have the help of the staff at Aloma Bowl to open their doors to us before they open to use the lanes to shoot. We got to invite a bunch of friends to come and be extras whether they were lead characters or just background bowlers to give the feeling of the alley being open and not empty while filming.

We worked with our friend Maria from Black Card Films and she absolutely crushed the filming and editing, highly recommend her to anyone looking to do a video!

As for favorite parts, it’s hard to pick just one. But truthfully I think my personal favorite was one of the earlier scenes where our lead character, Joey and one of the antagonist characters from the opposing team, Anthony did the classic movie moment of both reaching for the bowling ball and looking up at each other. It was just a random on the fly shot idea we had while filming and it just felt too funny when we did it!

Can we expect more new music from you this year? If so, what can you tell us so far?

Yes, absolutely! We actually just finished a new single in the studio. Being a completely DIY band, we don’t have a tremendous budget backing us. So we decided we would try to attack being a new band a little differently than what bands did in the past. Instead of working all year on one release whether it be an EP or full length. We are going to spend the next year working on just constantly putting out new singles maybe once every other month or so.. as long as everything goes as planned of course!

So TLDR: yes we plan on putting out a bunch of new stuff over the next year in an easy to digest fashion!

Is there any chance that we’ll see your music on vinyl or cassettes anytime soon?

I have to admit, we don’t have any immediate plans for that. But I would absolutely love to see our music in a physical format, so maybe we should make this happen very soon, huh?

I grew up in the age of CDs so I personally love the sentimental attachment to physical formats of music. I’m going to make some inquiries to get that conversation started!

I saw that Glazed said you were the new The Starting Line. Was The Starting Line influential to your band and sound at all? What do you think about the comparison?

Ha! I love that, The Starting Line is definitely one of my top 10 favorites so that’s cool with me! Personally I don’t totally see/think of us that way, but if that’s what we’re perceived as that would be totally cool with me. I would definitely at least say that with them being one of my all time favorites, I draw some heavy inspiration from Kenny vocally!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

No problem! I guess I’d just like to thank you guys for having interest in talking with us! And a big thanks to anyone who’s checked out our new video and song. We look forward to putting more music out and hitting the road again soon!
