Logans Circle - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Sean of Logans Circle. We discussed their cover of New Found Glory’s “The Story So Far”, Pacific Ridge Records NFG tribute compilation, musical influences, his thoughts looking back on last year’s EP, how the pandemic has impacted the band, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

The pleasure is ours and thanks for having us!

The Pacific Ridge Records tribute to New Found Glory was recently released. How did it work out for you to be featured on the compilation?

Our freshman E.P. was released a little over a year ago and was recorded/mastered/produced by the talented Blake Matthews (Clarity Audio Productions / With Clarity). He was luckily doing some other work for Pacific Ridge Records, including contributing a song for the tribute with his band, and recommended we hop on the tribute as well. From there we jumped back into the studio with him to record our cover for “The Story So Far”. We entered the studio with another band from the area, Come Clean, that was also covering a song for the tribute. Blake managed to track everything for both bands in that one day and from there he took care of the rest. Huge shootout to Blake for putting this all together!

You covered “The Story So Far”. Why did you pick that song?

When we found about getting a spot on the tribute, we started brainstorming a few potential songs we all generally agreed on wanting to cover. At this point we were unsure what songs were already taken, so it made things a bit difficult at first. Eventually the 3 of us decided on our top choices, with “The Story So Far” being in all of our top picks. Ultimately, it was sealed when we got the list of songs already taken by other bands and “The Story So Far” was the only one of our top choices left available. We were all stoked on the song selection and are thrilled with how the finished product came out!

How did you adapt the song to fit your style?

We tried to keep the cover as close to the original as we could. However, I’m sure we all unintentionally brought our own styles to each of our parts in some ways.

New Found Glory is such an influential band in pop/punk. Did they influence your band at all? Who are your biggest influences?

For sure NFG is an influence on our band. But, given their influence on the pop-punk scene so early on, it would be hard to say every pop-band wouldn’t be as well in some fashion. Some of our other biggest influences include The Almost, Panic at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, Set Your Goals, and of course the Wonder Years (which is the band that made the song our band name was derived from).

You released your EP last year. Can you tell us more about writing and recording it? What are your thoughts looking back on it now?

We are thrilled with the finish product, however the timing was pretty bad. We released the EP less than a month prior to Covid, with a slot scheduled a few weeks later opening for the Ataris. That show, and all others planned to promote the EP, were eventually cancelled or postponed. We still have high hopes for the EP once shows start up again. We’re in the process of writing new material and hoping for a proper release of our EP once we’re all allowed back at shows again. As mentioned, we entered Clarity Audio Productions for the EP and had a great experience recording with Blake. Outside of the timing of the release, we couldn’t be more happy with the process and look forward to recording many more songs with Blake in the future.

How has the pandemic impacted your band and the release?

It’s definitely made it a lot tougher to practice, put together content, and release new material. Our EP drop was mainly virtual, given the circumstances surrounding Covid. However, we look forward to giving it a proper send off once shows come back. For now, we’re just working on new songs when we can and hoping for the days we can finally play these songs live!

What’s coming up for your band this year?

We’re hoping to follow up our EP and NFG cover releases with a few more singles. We’re also hoping to release a few music videos and accompanying limited release merch to go with those singles. If all goes well, we hope to be hitting the stage again with a ton of great songs!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks again for having us!
