Chalk It Up! - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Chalk It Up!. We discussed the band’s new EP, how the pandemic has impacted the band, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

No, thank you for the opportunity. This is exciting for us.

Your new EP ‘Better Days’ came out a couple months ago. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for the EP? How long did you work on it?

Tito and Chris wrote a lot of the music themselves. After multiple lineup changes Joe put vocals on them. It took close to 2 years to get through all the changes in the lineup and we had to tweak the songs with every member change. Once we got a solid lineup our progress really picked up quick and we hit the studio and knocked out the ep.

Have you been pleased with the response you’ve been getting from fans and listeners so far?

Absolutely. We have been compared to a lot of our favorite bands. That is really exciting to hear. The hard copies of our EP sold out faster than we expected.

What was it like releasing an EP during the pandemic? Did it impact any of your plans or how you promoted it?

Yah this pandemic really took a dump on every last one of our plans. Release dates were pushed back. Plans for shows were canceled. Our practices were canceled for almost 5 months. We ended up working on our material strictly through email and social media messages. We were still able to find ways to get things done here and there but Covid definitely made it very difficult.

Save Your Breath” is a personal favorite of mine from the EP. Can you tell me about writing that song specifically? What were some of the lyrical inspirations?

Joe: The song was inspired by my family. They didn't accept who I wanted to be and had expectations set for me to follow their path. I chose to go my own way and work towards the person I wanted to be.

The artwork is interesting for the EP. What’s the meaning behind it? Who came up with the concept and designed it?

The album work came from graffiti Chris saw in Los Angeles. We chose it to represent where we are from which is Southern California.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Just be sure to keep in touch. We are currently working on plenty of new material and hoping to release it as soon as possible. Go stream our Better Days EP and be sure to like and share.
