Beach Slang - Cheap Thrills On A Dead End Street (EP Review)

Beach Slang has had a really good year. After such a phenomenal EP, Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken?, earlier this year it seemed nice that the band was following up with another EP so soon. Now, that can also have its pitfalls. What if the new EP isn't as good as the prior one? I wondered how the band could ever write another nearly flawless four song EP. Well my fears were put to rest the second I heard Cheap Thrills On A Dead End Street.

It's just as good if not better in some places than its predecessor. I can't get over how awesome this band is. I see everyone compare them to bands like The Replacements, Goo Goo Dolls, and Jawbreaker. Yeah, those are fair comparisons but I always want to get across the point that this band isn't aping anyone. This band isn't just another band that sounds like those bands. They are creating something special that deserves to be credited to the band solely. They're writing track after track of insanely solid, catchy and interestingly produced and mixed music. "American Girls And French Kisses" is just such a good track you almost have to listen to it twice in a row. The lyrics are great. It brings back such fond memories of being young and going to local shows and just being a part of the music scene. It captures the vibe and feelings perfectly. The first song on the EP "All Fuzzed Out" has such an excellent vocal performance and the band just vibe and present a really well written song to kick off the EP. I really like the stripped down vibe of "We Are Nothing". It's a great song to relax and just focus on the lyrics.

If Beach Slang had put both of their EPs together and added a couple songs, then I think I could have easily declared them my album of the year so far (don't worry I'm sure both of these EPs will be high on my best EPs list). This band has released two great EPs this year. I can't wait to hear what they have in store for a full length album. I don't want to gush too much, but honestly this is probably some of the best music you will hear this year. This band honestly deserves to be on almost anyone's best of list this year. If you've never heard Beach Slang, then you should without a doubt check them out.
