I recently had the opportunity to interview Dani O’Grady of All Hours. We discussed the writing and recording process for their new album, creating music videos, artwork, and more. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview.
Thank you!
You recently announced your new album Everything In Between. Can you tell me about writing and recording the album?
It took us about a year to write the album. We made a lot of demos over that time in our spare room and eventually got it down to the 10 tracks that made it on the album. Once we had the demos, we worked remotely with Tom Denney (ex-A Day to Remember) who did pro-production on the songs. We recorded the album with Troy Brady (ex-Amity Affliction) who co-produced the album. And then it went back to Tom who mixed it! We also recorded an acoustic piano song, “Passing Moments,” which was produced and mixed by Callan Orr (Dream on Dreamer).
Did you try anything new with your songwriting for the album?
I think we have fine-tuned our sound over the years, so we weren’t really doing anything that different, writing-wise. But we did really try and capture the full spectrum of our sound on the album, which goes from the most poppy pop-punk songs to the heavy breakdowns and screamy verses that we have always kind of done. We think these are the best songs we’ve ever written and we are really proud of them!
You released “Forever Meant Nothing” with the album announcement. What made you pick that song as the album announcement single?
We just really love that song! It’s just fun and has that nostalgic emo/pop-punk sound that we are all about.
You also released a video for the song. What was the video shoot like?
The video for “Forever Meant Nothing” was all DIY by us. Stewart [Whiteley], our bass player and one of the key songwriters of the band, does videography and wanted to give this one a go. I came up with the idea for the video and found the location, and then on the day it was a lot of fun working out all the different shots we were going to do. We think it turned out pretty good!
Do you like shooting videos or do you find them more stressful? How do you come up with the concepts for them?
I get really stressed beforehand and then once it’s all happening, it’s fine and it’s fun! I think the organisation and everything leading up to it can be stressful, just hoping it’s all going to go to plan and look good. The concepts usually come from a feeling we want to portray and then we go and kind of do a mood board and get references to give to whoever is doing the shoot. Or we scout a location ourselves and go from there
I really like the album artwork. Who came up with the concept for it and designed it?
One of the key tracks on the album is called “Jumping Out Of Windows,” and we thought it would be sick to have a window as the artwork. We were looking at different visual artists and came across Roger Mattos (@linearcollages) who had an art piece that we loved called A Separated Love. He remade the image for us as we wanted the warm colours of an afternoon sunset.
You’re co-releasing the album with Velocity and Equal Vision. How did you end up working with them for this album?
We signed with Velocity Records not long after our last EP was released, so it was always on the cards that we were going to release our album with them and Equal Vision!
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you want to add?
Yeah, our debut album, Everything In Between, will be out on November 6th! We will also have a couple more videos coming out. Keep an eye out for it and if you want you can follow our socials.
