Talking Music: Any Album/Any Era/Any Genre FALL EDITION (September 2014)

This feature has been an exclusively a Saturday feature so far this year. However, I've decided this month's feature would be posted during the week on Friday (not much difference but maybe a few more eyes will see it). Mainly because I've decided to focus on eleven albums that are good fall albums so it's a little more topical than the usual random album selection. Sure I could go on and on about music and list hundreds of albums that have a great fall feeling. I decided not to do that and to keep this list kind of short and sweet with eleven albums. I'm doing this so it isn't too exhausting to read and also just to go with what comes off the top of my head. (*NOTE: this list is not meant to be my favorite fall albums of all time. Like I said it's more of a quick list off the top of my head.) Don't worry this feature will be heading back to Saturday next month. Check out all the picks after the jump.

The Weeknd - Trilogy

This is kind of three albums or mixtapes in one, but if you go with the triple release simply titled Trilogy (that has three extra bonus songs) I think it counts as one rather large project. Trilogy  has a fantastic mood and vibe. It has this really slow, dark spacey R&B vibe. It's super impressive lyrically and I'm a huge fan of the production work. You can't go wrong listening to this project on a fall night.

Death Cab For Cutie - Plans

The tone of the album, the artwork, and some of the subject matter make this a great fall album. It's one of my favorite Death Cab albums. It just has a vibe that fits fall. Ben Gibbard's voice just soars in a way that make leaves fall off trees and brown all around you.

Fences - Fences

This is a lot like the Death Cab album in terms of why I feel like it is a fall album. It's a really interesting indie rock album. The lyrical content and the mood of the songs, to me, just scream fall. It's a really moody album and I really like that about it.

The Chariot - Wars And Rumors Of Wars

This album just screeches and wails really great hardcore. The lyrics, at times, feel really isolating. It is heavy and it definitely counteracts against the pop music that tends to get labeled as summer music. It's up there as my favorite or second favorite album The Chariot released.

Slipknot - Iowa

It's just a super dark and drudgy album. It just feels so isolating and that evokes some of those fall feelings. You know the vibe when everything seems so lonesome and changing. People are heading back to their jobs and school and away from those really crazy, happy, relaxing summer vibes of togetherness.

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

This album just has such a vibe that plays well during the fall. It's noisy, electronic, and in your face with such a dark intensity that I always enjoy playing songs like "Hurt" during this time of the year.

Jewel - Pieces Of You

This album has that mid-90's feel to it. "Who Will Save You Soul" and "You Were Meant For Me" are just great fall time songs. The sort of laid back nineties pop/folk/rock vibe of the album and the way Jewel sings on this album just fits nicely for this time of a year.

Transit - Young New England

This album missed the mark for many. I still find myself enjoying quite a bit of it. If Listen And Forgive is fireworks and summer vibes, then this album is the other end of the spectrum. "Weathered Souls" just has a nice fall vibe. Heck, even "Summer, Me" sounds more like a fall song. If you didn't dig this album the first time around get it out and see if it fits the fall weather.

The Ataris - So Long Astoria

The Ataris big major label debut has quite a few songs that play great during the summer. It feels like a nice transitional album from summer to fall.

Dashboard Confessional - The Swiss Army Romance

I spent a fall and a winter listening to this album nonstop many years ago when I was in high school. It's always felt like a winter album to me in terms of the emotion in the vocals and the stripped down music, but it's a perfect fall album too.

Saves The Day - Stay What You Are

This is pretty much an any time of the year album, but the mood, vibe, album cover, and lyrical content really suits fall. It's fantastic from start to finish. Quietly put on "At Your Funeral" and give this one a solid spin as you rake the yard.
