Crime of Passion - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the opportunity to interview Crime of Passion. We discussed how they started the band, their writing and recording process, and their new demo that’s out today via SVU Records. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview. Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you first become interested in music?
Susie: We started the band to work on something new together other than (our other band) The Greying. I always loved music, but when I started playing in my elementary school band when I was eight or nine, playing and performing music became my passion.
Derrick: It pretty much came to fruition based on the fact that we all like hanging out. The material scratches a totally different creative itch. The Greying is pretty dark & breakdown centric, this sort of goes back to our roots and love for punk, hardcore, and post hardcore.
You released your demo in October. What was the writing and recording process like for it?
Susie: All of the songs came together very naturally over the course of a few months. Recording with Steve Colwell (Low Tide / Swamplight Studio) was a great experience, it couldn’t have gone better and I’m thankful he wanted to help us execute our vision.
I really liked the song “Hired Gun”. It’s somewhat different sonically from the other two songs on the demo. Can you tell me about writing that song specifically and what your influence was for it?
Susie: “Hired Gun” was the last song written for the demo. That was a song that just came to me all at once. When I listened to it all back, I knew it was the perfect closer for the demo.
Derrick: I also think it just makes people aware that nothing is really off the table in terms of sound wise for us. It may seem like an outlier on the demo, but in the grand scheme of the band and the upcoming material it makes a lot of sense.
I saw from your feature in No Echo that you have a new release coming out in January 2026. What can you tell me about that so far?
Derrick: We’re putting out a second demo on January 7th via SVU Records. There will also be a physical release of both demos probably in the spring.
Susie: All I will say is that January’s release tops the first demo in every single way.
