Ten Years Out - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the opportunity to interview Gianni of Ten Years Out. We discussed the writing and recording process for their new EP, influences, lyrical inspiration, working with Hardknock Records, and more. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview.
Of course! Thank you for interviewing us.
You recently released your newest EP ‘What if we move in stealth?’. What was the writing and recording process like for the EP?
The writing and recording process was a little tumultuous at first. We had been writing music and lyrics at a steady pace ever since our first EP, but when we planned to begin recording, we faced some major issues due to personal injuries and lineup changes. But once things settled back down, we finished writing and recording the tracks and tried to get it out as quickly as possible without rushing it.
Did you try anything new or different with your songwriting on this new EP?
We definitely wanted to push the music into different directions, incorporating more metalcore and pop punk influences like Skycamefalling, Hopsefall, and Saves the Day. Lyrically, we were trying to touch a little more on specific personal issues, as well some storytelling with tracks like "Chianti" and "Falling to My Knees in Atlanta".
The closing song “Chianti” is one of my favorite songs on the EP? Can you tell me about writing that song and the lyrical inspiration for it?
Thank you! So that song dates back to 2023, when I (Gianni) went on a trip with my father and some family to Italy. One of the things we did there was visit Chianti so that we could see the orchards and my family can do some wine-tasting. Chianti is a very mountainous region, however, so the drive to and from there was very anxiety inducing. Towards the end of the trip, I got a huge wave of musical inspiration, so I wrote that song at the Florence airport, and recorded a demo when I got home and let it sit for a while. Fast forward to earlier this year, when we were thinking about what should go on this EP; I showed everyone the demo, and they all loved it, so we decided to use it. And there you have it.
Which song on the EP was the easiest to write?
The easiest song to write overall was probably "Chianti." That one was pretty much written all in one shot, and very little changed between when I wrote it and when we recorded it.
Where did you get the photo you used for the EP artwork and why did you choose it?
The photo on the cover is actually a photo I took of an orchard in Chianti. I gave it to my partner, who is an artist, and let them do what they thought would look cool, which resulted in the final artwork. We wanted this to be the cover art because it was relevant to the song "Chianti," as well as the title of the EP which is a lyric from that song.
You released the EP through Hardknock Records. What made you go with them for this EP?
Hardknock has been good friends of ours for a while now, and they've put out a lot of really cool music from other good friends of ours. They reached out about releasing our new music and trying to diversify their catalog, so we happily accepted, and working with them has been awesome so far. Shoutout Tony, Jacob, and Morty.
Do you have plans for a physical release for the EP such as cassettes, CDs, or vinyl?
So right now we're planning on doing CDs with Hardknock in the very near future. As far as cassettes and vinyls, those are definitely possibilities, but we'll have to see.
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?
No problem at all, thanks again for reaching out! Shoutout Hardknock, shoutout No Unity, shoutout Long Island.
