mydiarytoyou! - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview mydiarytoyou!. We discussed how a shared interest in music helped start the band, their upcoming EP, ‘You Have A Way With Last Words’, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thank you for having us; we really appreciate it.

Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you become interested in music?

Kamauri- It started from me and my brother Xavion during middle school. We got super into all different Emo/ Post-hardcore music such as bands like Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, Chiodos, From First to Last, etc… We were just very inspired by the music and the emotion behind it and knew this was something we wanted to do. We began to search for other like minded people in our area through social media and local shows. I had met Evan/our drummer through mutual friends and just stayed in contact with him. Early this year I had met Eli/our vocalist through social media. We bonded over having the same musical interest such as Alexisonfire, At the drive in, and Thrice. Soon after that we all met up to jam and it all clicked naturally on all levels!

You recently announced your new EP ‘You Have A Way With Last Words’. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process?

During the writing process for the EP, most of it was us jamming all together & songs coming out of jams. We always do instrumentation first even if Eli freestyles over it first to flesh out the riff. It just makes everything smoother. Sometimes Eli and me (Xavion) come together & combine our lyrics for songs, but most the time Eli comes up with them on his own. And as for the recording process, we recorded and mixed everything on our own.

Do you have a song from the EP that you’re most excited for people to hear? Why?

Xavion - My favorite off the EP has to be  “We built our home out of shattered things” I really love the lyrics, especially on the chorus and it’s one of my favorites to play.

Eli & Kamauri - “The danger of caring”. It’s very high energy and versatile.

Evan- “Murder she wrote”

Do you have a favorite lyric or musical moment from the EP?

Xavion - “I'm not your cure, I'm not a ghost”

Kamauri- “Don't call it love if you're not willing to bleed,  Don't call it love if you're not willing to change”

Eli- “There's blood in the wells

Just enough for me to swim

Just enough for me to drown ”

Evan - Both breakdowns on “We built our home out of shattered things”

You’ve released “Your Knife vs My Heart”. Does the EP sound similar to that song or will you be trying anything different sonically?

Yes, but I feel like it’s an improvement from “Your Knife vs My Heart” especially with the EP having heavier elements that are different compared to our single. We wanted heavier but not too heavy.

I really like the artwork for the EP. Who designed it and came up with the concept for it? What is the meaning behind it?

Thank you. Eli created the cover and immediately when we all saw it, we all agreed it had to be the EP cover. It symbolizes the acceptance of letting go. Coming to and acknowledging some things are beyond your control, although it can be scary but it’s okay to let go.

Can we expect a physical release for the demo such as CDs, cassettes, or vinyl? Is it important to you to have physical media?

We definitely think physical media is important, currently we’re in the process of trying to get CDs made & merch also.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

No problem, thank you so much for the interview!!  We really enjoyed the questions you asked. Keep a lookout for when we drop our CDs.
