Jeanwilder - Sound In The Signals Interview

📸 @dambwitha.b

I recently had the opportunity to interview Jeanwilder. We discussed how they formed the band, their new song, “Neoprene”, the process of filming a music video, when to expect new music, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

:)

Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you become interested in music and then decide to pursue it as well?

Myself, Kyle, and our lead guitarist AJ started Jeanwilder one evening when we were supposed to be writing for a City Pop band we had begun with another friend. We got stuck on those City Pop songs and decided to mess around with my Access Virus Synthesizer, which started Jeanwilder. We did a few more demos and ultimately landed on the name in the way we landed on most of the ideas, which was to not overthink anything and just go with what felt right in the moment.

AJ and I were in high school metal bands together, and we had recently reconnected after a decade. Both him and I took a strong interest in guitar as teenagers, almost with the goal to one-up each other all the time. For me, that turned into a production and songwriting career. For him, that was put off to the side but then since returned. Later, we added our singer Drew who is someone I have collaborated with for years, he was just the right fit and again went with it so as to not overthink things.

You released your song “Neoprene” in October. Can you tell me about writing that song?

Neoprene was probably about the 5th or 6th demo we made. Once we noticed it wasn't like the other songs, we decided to find a singer. Granted other songs had vocals on them at this point, this one sorta felt it needed a certain missing piece. Often we'd make instrumental music, but something felt odd about this one with no vocals so I made an instagram story about finding a singer. Drew dug the vibe and spit on the track, sent us back pretty much exactly what you hear now. Drew’s in Philly so once he happened to be around town in FL, we cut the vocals.

You also released a video for “Neoprene”. What was the video shoot like?

We really enjoyed making the video, although stressful due to time constraints, it came out great. Dookie is really an awesome videographer and editor. Originally there was a bigger concept with a longer more in depth plot, but that feeling was still injected into the final. There was meant to be more of a storyline involving our protagonist Jax and additional characters. The realization that she's playing on the DVD was meant to have more of a drawn out impact, but the way we chose to edit it ultimately felt right.

What is your favorite moment of the video and do you find filming music videos more fun or more stressful?

Personally my favorite part is the subway car scene with the full band and Jax. There's a few angles in there that just absolutely rock and fit the mood perfectly. I really enjoy the visual reality a music video creates so the process isn't all too painstaking. Other members may feel differently though haha. It can be difficult and stressful but I find anything worth doing usually has that element.

Can we expect more new music from the band anytime soon? If so, what can you tell us so far?

Yes, we're working on an EP as we speak which will start releasing in early 2026.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for the questions and thank you to everyone who has listened to our music thus far! Much love.
