One Flew West - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview One Flew West. We discussed the writing and recording process for new song, “The Blur”, why being in the studio is the most fun, signing with Smartpunk Records, what’s next for the band, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thank you for having us!

You just released your new song, “The Blur”. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for it?

We started putting The Blur together in the Summer of 2020, so it was during a very stressful and uncertain time. We didn't even know where the industry was going or what was next for us. I think a lot of that comes through in the song itself and we were just trying to capture our way of processing all the craziness that was happening around us. We think a lot of people will be able to relate to that part of it in addition to the other ideas in there.

What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

For us, the studio is always the most fun. We love the team at the Blasting Room and have nailed down a consistent system. It's a ton of fun for us to go in there and watch the songs morph into their final forms, we sometimes go in with a complete piece and other times a song may only be 25% done and we figure the rest out in there. That's the beauty of it!

The chorus is so catchy and I really like the lyrics. How long did you work on that chorus?

The chorus of The Blur is something that came together relatively quickly. Linden came to us with the skeleton completed, there's always little tweaks that happen to the vocal melody in the studio but for the most part it was recorded as written! The instrumental parts and bridge especially were the pieces that took more time.

You recently announced that you’ve signed with Smartpunk Records. What made you decide to sign with them?

We have had labels interested in us in the past, but we are fully aware that simply signing to a label is not a golden ticket to anything in and of itself. We decided to wait until we felt that entering an agreement with a label would actually get us something more than what we had access to and would be mutually beneficial. When Smartpunk approached us, we were immediately impressed by their excitement towards us and, more importantly, their fairness. It has been an incredible relationship so far and we are looking forward to continuing our partnership.

Who are some of your favorite artists or releases from Smartpunk?

A band we have found on the Smartpunk roster is RIVALS! We were not familiar with them prior to being with the label, but we've all been impressed by some of what we've heard from them.

Do you have plans for more new music this year? Could there possibly be an EP or album? What’s next?

We absolutely do! We plan to continue releasing music for the remainder of the year. We have a bunch of new material that we are very excited to share with people.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

We appreciate your time and want to thank anyone who has taken a moment to give our music a listen! Stay safe and be kind to each other out there.
