Sketching Youth - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Sketching Youth ahead of the release of their new song, “Pick Up”, which is out today. We discussed the band members early interest in music, the writing and recording process of “Waking Up In Your Bed”, filming the music video for it, lyrical inspiration, what listeners can expect from their upcoming album, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thank you for having us! It's pretty cool that Y’all give this space for new bands to talk about their work.

Can you tell me how you got together and formed the band for those who may be unfamiliar? How did you initially become interested in music?

All of us started making music from a young age, some of our member's parents worked or still work in the business. At some point, all of us were in bands and we all met through the local scene. Calvin was from Sweet Fifer and Chicko, Miguel and Rick from Spunkynoise. After both bands broke up we decided to get together and create Sketching Youth.

You just released your new song “Waking Up In Your Bed”. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for the song?

Calvin had some lyrics idea while playing the acoustic guitar and showed Chicko the initial idea, then together both of em got in the studio and recorded the track. The song was recorded at Calvin's old home studio, the same place that the band recorded all of the tracks.

What was the lyrical inspiration for it?

The song is about young love, fighting, and making up. It's not about a specific girl or something but more about a situation that would happen in some young couples' relationships.

You also released a video for the song. What was the video shoot like and who came up with the concept for it?

The video was super fun to shoot, we all had a blast. We had some friends show up and we threw a party, while we were shooting everyone was having some drinks and having fun. We also shot a big part of it on our local skatepark, we all love skateboarding so it was awesome to record a video there. The idea of the video was something that we all came up together with, Gabriel Freitas, our director, was a big part of the video concept, with a "DIY" vibe to it.

Do you like shooting videos or do you find them challenging as well?

We all really love doing those types of things. Shooting is always a really fun experience, even though it has challenging aspects to it. Overall we just overcome those things and enjoy ourselves to make sure we have the best results and show our true vibe.

You have a new album coming out this year. What can you tell me about it so far? What can listeners expect?

What we can say is that this album is going to be the best release in the last decade at least... LOL. Jokes aside, we are really excited to put out this album, we've been working on it for about six months. The album talks about a few different topics, but in general, we talk about stuff that goes on in our day-to-day lives, about being young and stupid, growing up and becoming an adult, love, having fun, and shit like that.

I’ve read that the album is also about “starting a movement and bringing young people together and giving them space to express themselves and showing the world their potential”. Tell us more about that.

Yung Rekkless Life is the title of our album and also a movement that we want to start, a lifestyle. It represents the youth, it is about bringing young people together, giving them a voice. But more than that we want the people to feel comfortable being themselves, not worrying about what others think. As artists, we think that we have a very important role in talking to our audience, and having a whole movement like that gives young people something to identify with.

Do you have a song from the album that you’re most excited for people to hear? Why?

That's a hard one, we love all the songs, but we have a special thing for "5am" (that seems to be our friends favorite), "Yung Rekkless Life",  and the last track on the album which we'll keep as a secret for now, but it is the most random one, with drum and guitar solos, and even some screamo.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

We had a lot of fun answering these, once again thanks for having us. Friday (03/05) we will be releasing our second single Pick Up with a very funny music video that we are sure that everyone will laugh at a lot while watching.
