Better Love - Sound In The Signals Interview

Lauren Rohland

I recently had the opportunity to interview Brad from Better Love. We discussed the band’s new single, how some might think they’re pushing boundaries with their newer music, merch, what’s next for the band, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thanks for having me!

You just released your new single “Break U Down”. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for the song?

It came together pretty similarly to most of our other previous songs - Jackie and I usually get a rough outline of music and lyrics together, then we'll all bring it into the studio where everything gets fleshed out. The difference this time around is some of the instrumentals (synths, guitars) from the original demo captured the essence of what we wanted for the final version of the song, so we used those takes! Our engineer, James, really stepped in with tracking everything else and had a huge hand in the production side of this song. He really elevated it in a new, special way for us.

The sound of the band has evolved some since the earlier releases. What are some influences and ideas that have impacted your direction and writing style?

I think lately we've been leaning more and more into the music that makes us excited these days. We've grown a ton as songwriters and just as fans of music and I think that our view of what makes a song special to us has been coming more into shape recently. I feel like anyone who's been around and listening to us for a little while would say we're pushing some of our own boundaries with our newer music, and while I wouldn't say they're wrong, it doesn't feel like that's something we're actively trying to do. We're really just following whatever is giving us a spark in that moment and running with it!

Some of your members were in Bonfires and City Mouth. How did your time in other bands impact how you operate Better Love?

We learned that being in a band together was more fun than being in different bands! All jokes aside, I think that being in different bands before Better Love has given us great footing for this project. We have a much better grasp of the do's and don'ts of being a part of a collaborative effort and have much clearer expectations amongst ourselves for how we operate together as a unit. It's also given us a great perspective of what's important to us and what we want to achieve in this band's lifetime. Which is, of course, being the biggest band the world has ever seen.

I feel like your band has been building up a ton of hype and interest. What do you think has made your band stick out from other bands?

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure! I like to think maybe there's something about our music that makes for a great display of our personalities as musicians and as people. More than anything, I think that although we don't have a super large following by any means, we try our best to connect with those who are there with us. My favorite bands and artists always had a way of writing songs that felt like they were part of a movie soundtrack about my own life. When I would hear their music everything just clicked, like they could verbalize and manifest a lot of my deeper seated emotions and helped some of them make sense to me. It's like they were right there with me. My biggest goal is that we can give even just a few people that same experience with our music either at a show (someday in the future) or through their own headphones (today).

I really like your merch. I think you have released some really cool items. Who designs your merch and how involved is the band in the process?

Thanks! For the most part we actually do a lot of it ourselves! Kevin usually handles most, if not all things on the merch side. The goal for our designs has always been to be relatively simple so they'll usually toss in ideas, we'll all discuss it a bit and come to a final mock up for something pretty quickly. Thankfully we all have a pretty similar eye for what we want in our merch items. Otherwise we currently have a couple items on our webstore with designs and photos by our friends Carlos Cardenas and Benjamin Lieber!

Is there any chance that you have plans to release more new music in 2021, perhaps an EP or album? What can fans expect?

I can't say anything too certain just yet but a longer EP isn't off the table! Our main goal right now is to write as much as we can going into this winter and see what happens. In any case, I'm sure there will be plenty of new music in 2021!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?
